Acrylic on wood & mixed media, 8"x10", 2023
Hillary Rubel (She/Her), BA, Urban Studies, 4th Year
Artwork Description: "Urban Canvas" explores how our cities can be attempted to be manipulated through intervention.
Artist's Bio: As a recent graduate from the University of Calgary with an Undergraduate degree in Urban Studies and a minor in Visual Media Studies and Art History, Hillary is proud to be considered an emerging artist. Her love for art and creating developed at a young age. She mainly paints in oils and acrylics but has recently taken an interest in incorporating photography into her artworks. Her ultimate interests lie in helping to design sustainable cities.
Artist's statement: In my artwork, I gather inspiration from both the natural and urban landscape. Sensitivity to colour also plays a major role in my paintings to help set the mood of the painting. The art courses I have taken in university have pushed my technique further. Most notably, courses in abstract painting and photography have forced me to experiment with different styles. I feel this is still the beginning and I look forward to seeing how I grow as an artist in the future.
