The Marinka siege

[4]

[5]

Between the Armed Forces of Russia, the Donbas rebel forces, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there is a siege going on in the city of Marinka [6]. In the Donbas region is the Ukrainian settlement of Marinka. [7] Following Vladimir Putin's acceptance of the Donetsk People's Republic and the ensuing Russian invasion of Ukraine, violence broke out. Russia and the DNR forces attacked Marinka three weeks later. [8]

The first significant combat following the signing of Minsk II took place near Marinka in June 2015 and resulted in the collapse of the DNR onslaught, during which Ukrainian forces continued to hold Marinka.

Prelude

On February 17, when DPR soldiers injured a humanitarian worker, the first shelling of Marinka started.

[10]

[11] There were perhaps 20 explosions altogether from the 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM shelling period.

[12] In the days before the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, shelling increased, resulting in the deaths of two Ukrainian soldiers and the injuries of four more. [13]

Battle

Around March 17, 2022, when the Russian Ministry of Defense erroneously asserted that DPR forces had taken Marinka, fighting started for the city itself.

[14] White phosphorus weapons used by Russian forces in the town caused "dozens of fires" that Ukrainian rescue services put out on March 30 and 31. [15]

Russian and DPR forces increased their offensive operations in mid-April, at the start of the Battle of Donbas, and launched many strikes on Marinka.

[16] After Russian forces shelled the city on April 17, two persons died and four were injured.

[17] On April 19, two days after the Russian attack had failed, Ukrainian forces had fully reclaimed control of Marinka.

[18]

[19] On April 23, 25, and 26, Ukrainian forces withstood three Russian assaults on the town. [18] [20]

The ISW reported on May 20 that after the siege of Mariupol was lifted, Russian and DPR forces redirected their attention to Marinka and committed more soldiers to the effort.

[21] As battle grew more intense throughout May, control of southern Marinka alternated between Ukrainian and Russian forces. [22] On June 25, Ukraine resisted additional Russian assaults. [23] On July 3, the Russian Ministry of Defense asserted that fighting in Marinka had cost the 54th Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine "more than 60% of its people and equipment," although this assertion could not be independently confirmed. [24]

Beginning with a failed Russian offensive on Marinka on July 11 and continuing through early August, fighting became more intense.

[25] On July 30 and August 1, there were two additional unsuccessful assaults.

[26]

[27] The DPR and Wagner forces asserted control over half of Marinka on August 5.

[28] On August 25, Russian forces attacked Marinka once more without succeeding. [29] Russian soldiers advanced marginally in Marinka for the whole month of August. [30] According to the ISW, the situation on the frontline in Marinka remained mostly unchanged in September and October. [31]

On November 3, Ukraine claimed to have evacuated Marinka's pre-war civilian population, which numbered about 9,400 individuals.

[32] Around this time, fighting resumed with pro-Russian outlets reporting slight victories in the town, despite the lack of any tangible proof. [33] By December 13, Ukrainian forces controlled the western part of the town past Druzhba street, while Russian-DPR forces held control of 70% of Marinka. [34] DPR president Denis Pushilin declared that Russian forces would "soon" take control of Marinka. [35]

Impact

The fighting has significantly damaged Marinka.

[36] The town square is completely devastated, the golden dome of the local church is half melted, and the Marinka cultural centre has been demolished.

[37] Marinka school No. 1, the city's primary school, is allegedly demolished.
