Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022

The Battle of Brovary was fought for control of the Brovary suburb, to the east of Ukraine's capital city, Kiev, during the Kyiv offensive of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ukrainian soldiers engaged Russian forces as they were moving west from the southern Chernihiv Oblast. Up until Russian soldiers withdrew on April 2, 2022, control of the suburb was in dispute.

On March 9, 2022, in the late evening, a column of Russian armored vehicles entered Brovary from the north along Highway M01.

[10] The 90th Guards Tank Division's 6th and 239th Tank Regiments made up the column, which advanced slowly and contained numerous extremely antiquated vehicles including T-72 tanks, which analysts have deemed unfit for modern warfare. [11] In addition, the convoy was headed by self-propelled artillery such as TOS-1, which were very vulnerable targets. [10]

Ukrainian soldiers spotted an opportunity to surprise the Russian troops and launched an offensive on a village close to Brovary[10]. The Ukrainians disarmed many tanks and armored personnel carriers using fire and antitank missiles. [11] The ambushers initially targeted the first and final trucks in the convoy to trap the rest in the middle, according to a later account from a Ukrainian soldier. In this sense, the offensive was not totally successful, as the Ukrainians were unable to cut off the Russians' line of retreat. [10] After suffering significant losses, the Russian column was compelled to withdraw. [12] [13] According to Ukrainian sources, the clash resulted in the death of Colonel Andrei Zakharov, commander of the 6th Tank Regiment. [2] [14] According to reports, other Russian soldiers ran into the neighboring woods and villages on foot. [11]

Heavy fighting broke out in the villages east of the ambush site[10] despite the 90th Guards Tank Division's departure, where fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces raged for several days.

[10] Russian ambush survivors killed villagers' residents because they believed they were supporting the local defenders.

[11]

On March 12, Russia asserted that its soldiers had taken out the major communications and intelligence hub of the Ukrainian military at Brovary.

[15] However, Brovary's mayor, Ihor Sapozhko, said, "We are ready for them." [16]

Russia began to shell the Brovary region on March 29. The burning of a warehouse caused significant damage to the adjacent villages. [17]

On March 30, Sapozhko reported that fighting was still going on in Nova Basan but that Ukrainian forces had driven back Russian forces and taken back the villages of Ploske, Svetilny, and Hrebelky.

April

Rudnya, Shevchenkove, Bobryk, Stara Basan, Nova Basan, Makiyivka, Pohreby, Bazhanivka, Volodymyrivka, Shnyakivka, Salne, Sofiyivka, and Havrylivka were all declared retaken by Ukraine on April 1.

[19] According to Sapozhko, the entire Brovary district had "nearly" been abandoned by Russian soldiers. [20] while "mopping up" operations are being carried out by Ukrainian soldiers.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that all of Kyiv Oblast, where Brovary is located, was free of Russian forces on April 2, 2022.
