During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the fight of Volnovakha was a conflict that took place on the battlefield and lasted from the 25th of February until the 12th of March. It was a component of the offensive that was launched in eastern Ukraine. The little city of Volnovakha in Donetsk Oblast, which is located close to the border between Ukraine and the DPR, was the site of an engagement between Russian and DPR forces and Ukrainian forces.
The conflict, which was commanded by DPR forces and resulted in significant losses on both sides and widespread destruction of the town, was spearheaded by those forces.

Battle
On the second day of the invasion, the 25th of February, Russian soldiers shelled Volnovakha, hitting civilian areas with their projectiles.
According to an article published by The Guardian, the Russian bombing of Volnovakha was similar to tactics that Russia had previously used on civilian targets in Syria. [2]
[3] According to reports from Russian news sources, DPR soldiers took control of the nearby town of Mykolaivka on February 25. [4] By the 28th of February, Ukrainian authorities claimed that the city of Volnovakha was on the edge of a humanitarian disaster. By the 1st of March, the city was almost completely destroyed, with approximately 90% of its structures either damaged or destroyed. [1] [5] [6] Additionally, the city was cut off from its sources of food, water, and energy. [7] According to Dmytro Lubinets, a local member of parliament, after the bombardment, bodies were left lying uncollected in the streets. [3]
By the 1st of March, Ukrainian officials had successfully rescued almost 500 inhabitants from the city of Volnovakha.
[8]
Over the skies of Volnovakha on March 4, a Russian Sukhoi Su-25 was brought down by enemy fire.
[9] After some time had passed, a Russian Mil Mi-8 helicopter was brought down by enemy fire as it neared the wreckage of the Su-25. [10]
The DPRK authorities made the announcement on March 5 that Colonel Vladimir Zhoga, the commander of Sparta Battalion and a close confidant of Arsen Pavlov, had been killed in combat at Volnovakha. Zhoga was a member of the Sparta Battalion.
[11]
[12]
[13] Zhoga was posthumously bestowed the title of Hero of the Donetsk People's Republic by Denis Pushilin, the Head of the Donetsk People's Republic, while Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, bestowed upon him the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. Both of these honors were bestowed upon Zhoga after his death.
[14]
[15] His father, Artem Zhoga, who was also the chief of staff, took over as commander of the Sparta Battalion after his death.
[16]
In order to facilitate the evacuation of civilians from Volnovakha and the nearby city of Mariupol, which had been under siege since the 24th of February, Ukrainian and Russian forces reached an agreement on the 7th of March regarding the establishment of a demilitarized humanitarian corridor through the two cities. Despite this agreement, Russian forces allegedly violated the demilitarization zone.
[17]
The Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement on March 11 confirming that DPR forces had taken control of Volnovakha.
[18] Videos that were subsequently shared on social media platforms showed Russian personnel and vehicles stationed in the city, in addition to abandoned Ukrainian tanks. [19]
On March 12, the governor of Donetsk Oblast, Pavlo Kyrylenko, declared that Russian forces had entirely devastated Volnovakha and that the city had "essentially ceased to exist," despite the fact that fighting was still ongoing.
[20]
[21] The information that the city had been taken over by pro-Russian separatists and that a significant portion of it had been damaged in the battle was corroborated by the Associated Press. [22] After some time had passed, the Ukrainian authorities informed the public that Captain Pavlo Sbytov, the commander of the Ukrainian 503rd Naval Infantry Battalion, had been killed in action during the conflict. [23]
On March 14, Russian military troops brought down a Ukrainian Su-25 fighter jet that was flying near Volnovakha. The pilot, Roman Vasyliuk, who had been seized by Russian forces was eventually freed on April 24 as part of a prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine. [24] [25]
