The battle of Ivankiv was a military conflict that took place as a part of the Kyiv assault during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The objective of the combat was to gain control of the town of Ivankiv, which is situated at an important crossing point over the river Teteriv. Elements of the Russian Armed Forces and the Ukrainian Ground Forces participated in the conflict as fighters. The combat began on the 25th of February 2022 and continued until the 31st of March 2022, when Russian forces withdrew from the field. This engagement was a sub-part of a wider strategy to encircle Kyiv, which is the capital and largest city of Ukraine. While Russian forces were successful in seizing the settlement on February 27th, Ukrainian military forces in the western suburbs of the capital city, including Irpin, Bucha, and Hostomel, fought back against the Russian assault.

Battle

After making a significant advancement in the Battle of Chernobyl, Russian forces started moving into Ivankiv in the early morning hours of February 25, 2022, approaching the city from the northeast. The march of Russian tanks on Kyiv was halted as a result of Ukrainian forces destroying the bridge that crossed the Teteriv River at Ivankiv. Ivankiv and the adjoining town of Dymer were the sites of intense fighting between airborne assault troops from Ukraine and Russian troops. [1] The 5th Separate Guards Tank Brigade was one of the Russian troops that was reportedly involved, and they suffered some vehicle losses. [2]

After a brief struggle, a portion of the Russian military was successful in penetrating Ivankiv and seizing control of the strategically crucial Antonov Airport. Just 20 kilometers or 12 miles to the northwest of Kyiv is where you'll find the airport. [3]

The fighting in Ivankiv lasted throughout the afternoon and evening of February 25, with Russian forces deploying artillery to bombard the town. As a result, some civilians were injured or killed in the conflict. Ivankiv is also the location of a significant gas pipeline; should this pipeline be damaged, the flow of gas from Ukraine to a significant portion of Europe may be halted. [4]

The combat in Ivankiv continued on February 26[5,] and on February 27, the Ivankiv Historical and Local History Museum was demolished by Russian forces during the war. As a result of this destruction, over twenty of the artist Maria Prymachenko's paintings were lost.

[7] In response, the Minister of Culture of Ukraine, Olexandr Tkachenko, made a formal request to UNESCO that Russia be expelled from the organization. [8]

On the morning of February 27th, satellite imagery revealed the presence of a convoy of Russian vehicles that was longer than 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) and headed in the direction of Ivankiv.

[9] By the 28th of February, the length of the convoy had increased to approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers). [10] On March 2, it was officially announced that Russian soldiers had taken control of Ivankiv. [11]
