Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022
During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, there was a military clash between Russia and Ukraine called the Battle of Izium. It took place as part of the Eastern Ukraine offensive. Due to the town's significance as a transportation hub, the conflict for control of Izium began in March 2022. [10] In order to connect its forces in the Kharkiv Oblast and the Donbas region, the Russian military desired to take Izium. [18]
During the 2022 Ukrainian Kharkiv counteroffensive, on September 10, 2022, Ukrainian forces retook the town, and 440 remains were discovered in local mass graves.
[20] The battle reduced Izium's population to just 10,000. [21]

After the war, Polovtsian stone sculptures from the 9th to the 13th century were found on Mount Kremenets in Izium. The statue on the right has been completely destroyed, while the adjoining WWII hero memorial (background) has been damaged.
Beginning on February 28, 2022, the Russian military began conducting limited rocket attacks on Izium. On March 3, 2022, the Russian military resumed its rocket attacks. On March 3, eight civilians were murdered, and there were reports of major damage to the town's main hospital. [22] The next day, Russian forces moved closer to Izium and eventually arrived at its northern edge. [Reference needed] By 6 March, the Russian force was in control of two of Izium's neighborhoods and the train station. [23]
The news that Izium had been captured by Russian forces was unofficially published by Russian online publications in the evening of March 7.
[10] Russian and Ukrainian forces began fighting for control of the town the following day,[24] with Russian troops ultimately being repulsed.
[25] While Russian forces maintained their cautious advance against Izium between March 9 and 10, 2,250 civilians were evacuated from the town.
[26]
Russian forces took control of the town's northern section on March 12.
[27] The Russian forces continued to approach the next day[28], but was ultimately repulsed, according to the Ukrainian military. [29]
Russian forces invaded the southern portion of Izium somewhere between March 15 and March 16, but Ukrainian forces were able to quickly retake those positions.
[9] On March 17, a US Department of Defense official claimed that Russian forces had once more captured Izium,[30] although the Institute for the Study of War refuted this (ISW). Near the Barvinkivsky Highway, Russian troops crossed the Donets River, but after being ambushed, they were stopped by Ukrainian forces[12]. [9] Fighting persisted the following day. [12]
A new Russian attempt to seize Izium's center was thwarted between March 19 and 20.
[31] Russian engineering personnel attempted to build a pontoon bridge over the Donets river during the fighting[32] in order to avoid two vehicle bridges that Ukrainian forces had partially destroyed in an effort to impede the Russian advance. [18] However, the engineering troops were ambushed, resulting in the deaths of 19 and injuries of 46 Russian soldiers. Colonel Nikolay Ovcharenko, who oversaw the engineering division, was one of the deceased. [6] [7] In the end, Russian forces were able to construct two pontoon bridges and cross the river with tanks to encircle the Ukrainian-controlled area of Izium. [18] On March 22, during this time, Ukrainian forces made an attempt to launch a counterattack in order to retake the town. [33]
The Ukrainian government refuted the Russian military's claim that it had fully gained control of Izium on March 24 and said that fighting was still going on. [34][35]
[36][37] A local official claimed that Ukrainian troops were in the south of the town, with the Donets River dividing them, and Russian forces were in control of the northern portion of the town. He also affirmed that Izium was blockaded and that by this time the city had been "totally demolished." [15]
A US DoD officer and others claimed that on March 25, Russian soldiers breached Ukrainian defenses to the south of Izium,[38] moving 10 kilometers.
[39] The ISW, however, cited the Ukrainian military as saying that the Russian troops had been driven back near the settlement of Kamyanka, which is close to Izium. The ISW went on to say that after failing to take the town in a direct assault, Russian forces would keep trying to encircle it. [40]
Russian forces reportedly took control of Kamyanka and two other villages on March 27, southwest and southeast of Izium, although Ukrainian forces asserted that they later managed to retake all three settlements.
[41] Additionally, they asserted that they had destroyed a Russian Sukhoi Su-34 fighter jet close to Izium. [42] The combat went south of Izium along the route to Sloviansk two days after it was established that Kamyanka was under Russian control and that Russian forces had fortified their positions around it. [43]
The Ukrainian military officially acknowledged Russian sovereignty of Izium on April 1.
[1][2][3] Izium's deputy mayor, Volodymyr Matsokin, said the next day in an interview with Ukrinform that 80% of the city's residential structures had been destroyed and that there was no power, heat, or water in the city. [23]

[51] Russian forces were still moving slowly south of Izium as of April 26[52], but the next day they took control of a town west of the city as well as the surrounding area of another 20 kilometers away. [53] [54]
According to the Ukrainian newspaper Defense Express, Valery Gerasimov, the head of the Russian Army's general staff, came in Izium on April 27, 2022, to personally lead the Russian onslaught in the area.
[55] The Ukrainian Independent Information Agency reports that Gerasimov was hurt on May 1, 2022, close to Izium. [56] [57] A Ukrainian source disputed that Ukraine was intentionally targeting Gerasimov and said that when the command post was hit, Gerasimov had already left to return to Russia. However, two US officials confirmed that Gerasimov had been in the area. [58] According to Ukrainian officials, General Andrei Simonov of Russia died in the strike. [59]
