Background

Romny, in rural Sumy Oblast, has 38,000 people. The city is strategically important because highway H07 connects Sumy, Brovary, Nedryhailiv, and Kyiv, linking the Kyiv offensive and Northeastern Ukraine offensive.

Battle 24-28 February

On the evening of February 24, the first day of the Russian invasion, two convoys of Russian soldiers from Nedryhailiv and Konotop (east and north of Romny, respectively) headed toward Romny.

[8]

Krasnopillia-bound Russian vehicles bypassed Sumy on February 26 and 27 to reach Romny. Romny Raion head Denis Vashchenko reported no wounded, killed, or shelling. Ukraine bombed the second convoy before Romny. [9]

Russia attacked Romny Correctional Colony on February 28. The same day, Russian forces crushed a civilian in Pogozha Krynytsia who tried to block Russian tanks with his car. [10]

4-March

Russian forces took the contested villages of Bilovods'ke and Bobryk south of Romny on March 1.

[12][13]

[14] After negotiations with Russia and Ukraine, Romny became a humanitarian corridor for civilians fleeing Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv oblasts on March 4. [15] Spartak residents attempted to block Russian vehicles from Nedryhailiv to Romny the same day. They blocked the road, but the Russians killed one civilian. [16] Later that evening on March 4, Russian forces blocked the road from Lypova Dolyna to Romny and Bilovod'ske in southern Romny Raion, while the highway between Nedryhailiv and Romny was still under Ukrainian control.

Russian soldiers destroyed a poultry farm overnight on March 4 and 5, killing 100,000 birds and causing one million hryvnias in damage.

5-March

Vashchenko said Russian troops released three of four hostages on March 5. On the same day, Russian soldiers on the road shot Ukrainian TDF troops at a gas station, killing one and wounding two. On March 5, Russian soldiers fired at two cars traveling from Sumy to Romny in Pustovyitivka. The shooting wounded three civilians and killed one. [18] Ukrainian forces destroyed a Russian column and killed unspecified soldiers in Romny raion's Skripali' village later that evening. [2]

Pustoviitivka and Romny were shot in the evening of March 5–6 without injuries. However, the Romny shooting caused power outages. [19]

8–March

On March 11, Vashchenko reported that Ukrainian forces unblocked the Romny-Lokhvytsia road, allowing civilians to flee south. Police and Ukrainian TDF arrested 29 Russian soldiers in a field near Romny that morning. [3] [20][21]

On March 12, Sumy Oblast opened green corridors for civilians from Sumy, Trostianets, Konotop, Lebedyn, Velyka Pisaryvka, and Krasnopillia to flee to Poltava.

[22] Humanitarian corridors resumed March 18. [23]

On March 19, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that the 1st Guards Tank Army of Russia focused on surrounding Sumy and attempted offensives in Trostianets, Pryluky, and Romny, but failed.
