Background

The acting administrative headquarters of Luhansk Oblast, Sievierodonetsk, which is situated immediately southeast of Rubizhne, came under fire from Russian soldiers at around 15:00 on February 28.

[8] Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Luhansk Oblast, reported one fatality and numerous injuries. The bombardment also struck gas pipelines. [9]

Fighting was reported on March 2 in nearly every village close to Sievierodonetsk.

[10] The city was still being shelled by Russian forces, which hit a school gym that was serving as a bomb shelter. No fatalities were noted. [11] Ukrainian officials reported that at 15:20 that day, Russian forces attempted to enter the city but were rebuffed. [12] Haidai reported fighting on the fringes of Lysychansk, Sievierodonetsk, and Rubizhne four days later. [13]

Battle \sMarch

On March 17, pro-Russian LPR soldiers marched into[14] and took control of Rubizhne's western and northwestern outskirts before attacking the southern portion of the town at around noon[15] and seizing a city hall. By the next day, the LPR was in possession of areas of Rubizhne, but fighting raged in the southern half of the town. [16] Russian and LPR forces took control of Varvarivka, a settlement north of Rubizhne, between March 19 and 20. [17]

As of March 22, Popasna, Lysychansk, Rubizhne, Sievierodonetsk, and Kreminna had not yet been liberated, according to LPR leader Leonid Pasechnik, who also stated that "nearly 80% of the area" of the Luhansk region had been taken. He observed that the situation in the battlefields is "stably severe" and forces of the People's Militia of the LPR were fighting to take Popasna and Rubizhne under control. [18] Russian forces advanced in Rubizhne two days later. [19]

April

By 6 April, mortars and rockets were reportedly dropping in Rubizhne at "regular, steady intervals," and Russian forces had apparently taken control of 60% of the city[20].

[21] The next day, members of the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade mounted an operation which reportedly drove Russian forces 6-10 kilometers away from the settlement of Kreminna, located northwest of Rubizhne. [7]

According to reports, the region was the focus of the Russian 4th Guards Tank Division on April 9.

[6] Russian strikes that persisted between April 11 and April 12 made no progress. [22] [23] By April 16, Ukraine stated that Russian shelling had destroyed 70% of Sievierodonetsk. [24]

Russia stepped up its campaign in Donbas on April 18, using airstrikes to hit Sievierodonetsk.

[25]

[26] Russian troops reached Kreminna that morning[27] while Ukrainian forces were losing ground in the midst of fierce combat. [28] More than 200 civilians, according to Haidai, were slain during the combat, and four more were murdered and one more injured while attempting to flee. [29] [30] According to the LPR, a battalion commander was killed during the combat when he and his soldiers were encircled by Ukrainian forces close to Kreminna and "fought to the death." Unknown numbers of people were killed and wounded during the fighting. [31] Russian forces took complete control of Kreminna the following day. [32] [33]

On April 20, Rubizhne's center was taken over by Russian and LPR soldiers who had advanced there.

[35] Russian troops were steadily making their way west and south of the city as of April 26 in an effort to encircle Ukrainian forces. [36]

May

On May 3, Ukraine reported that a grain elevator in Rubizhne had been hit by Russian jets. The Golden AGRO LLC grain elevator, which has been operational since 2020, was totally destroyed.
