Additional details: The Izium War (2022)

A settlement called Dovhenke is located on the border of Kharkiv and Donetsk Oblasts. On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, in a dramatic escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which had began in 2014. The invasion prompted Europe's fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II,[2] [3] with a third of the population being displaced and more than 6.5 million Ukrainians leaving the nation. [5] [6] The Ukrainian military officially acknowledged Russian sovereignty of Izium on April 1. [7] [8] Izium's deputy mayor, Volodymyr Matsokin, said the next day in an interview with Ukrinform that 80% of the city's residential structures had been destroyed and that there was no power, heat, or water in the city. [9]

Battles Initial Combat

Russian forces attacked Dovhenke and Dmytrivka [UK] on April 11; the offensive was defeated by Ukrainian forces.

[10]

The Ukrainian military declared on May 15 that Russia has begun a fresh assault to seize the hamlet.

[11]

According to the Ukrainian News Agency, on June 6, Ukrainian troops repelled a fresh assault on Dovhenke, with Russian forces pulling back some of their units to Izium due to casualties.

[12] Alexander Borodai, a member of the Russian State Duma, reportedly arrived to Dovhenke around this time to take part in the Donbas Volunteer Union's attack on the settlement. [13]

Following the First Battle

By the 12th of June, Russia had apparently taken control of the settlement, since the Ukrainian government stated that the Russian army was launching an offensive from Dovhenke towards Mazanivka and Dolina.

[14]

At the end of June, Russian operations moved to the south of the village,[16] with Russian troops attempting to advance from Dovhenke towards Mazanivka. As of June 25, fighting was still going on close to Dovhenke.

Second Conflict

Oleksiy Arestovych, the presidential advisor, declared on August 5 that battle had resumed in Dovhenke and that the Ukrainian army had launched a fresh counteroffensive against Russian soldiers close to Izium.

[1] The area, including Dovhenke, was subjected to intense Russian bombing the following day;[18] this continued on August 7. [19] On August 8th, Arestovych reported that Dovhenke had reportedly been retaken by the Ukrainian Armed Forces and that Ukraine had made good progress towards Izium. [20] According to a report released on that day by the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian forces had destroyed seven drones in a number of different towns, including Dovhenke. [21] Arestovych stated on August 9 that "Some data says Dovhenke is already behind us. They have been moved." [22] Dovhenke and numerous other villages were being attacked by Russian forces, according to a report from the Ukrainian Armed Forces' General Staff on that day. [23] On August 10, Russian forces shelled Dovhenke and the other villages. Fighting stagnated until September 6th, when a counteroffensive drove Russia from Dovhenke. Later, it drove Russia out of the majority of the Kharkiv oblast. [24]
