Beginning on February 28, 2022, the Russian military began conducting limited rocket attacks on Izium. On March 3, 2022, the Russian military resumed its rocket attacks. On March 3, eight civilians were murdered, and there were reports of major damage to the town's main hospital. [6] The Ukrainian military officially acknowledged Russian sovereignty of Izium on April 1. [7] [8] [9] Izium's deputy mayor, Volodymyr Matsokin, claimed the next day in an interview with Ukrinform that 80% of the city's residential structures had been destroyed and that there was no power, heat, or water in the city. Kreminna was the first city to fall during the Donbas Offensive that was proclaimed by Russia on 18 April. 200 civilians were reportedly murdered, according to Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Luhansk Oblast, although there may have been more. Russian forces were reportedly killed by a gas explosion in the Kreminna City Hall on April 25, according to Ukrainian officials. [10] The city is under Russian military administration. Heavy artillery fire was being sprayed around the streets as fighting went on all night. Later, on April 19, Russian forces took control of the city hall. [Reference needed] The last of the Ukrainian forces left the city that evening, according to Haidai, giving Russian forces complete authority. [11] By May 27, the majority of Lyman's territory was under Russian control. [12]

Battles

A nun and two monks from the Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra perished on May 30, 2022, as a result of shelling that hit the town of Sviatohirsk. Three other monks were hurt.

[13] The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched a much more significant ground assault on the city that evening on May 30 with ferocious artillery strikes. The Russian Federation's infantry troops attacked Sviatohirsk during the day on May 31 with the intention of encircling the entire city and creating a cauldron. [13]

The Ukrainians blamed Russian forces for starting a large-scale fire that broke out on June 4 on the grounds of the Holy Dormition Lavra and destroyed the monastery's main shrine.

[14]

The strikes intensified between June 3 and 4. On June 6, the Russian Federation's Ministry of Defense declared that it now fully controlled the city of Sviatohirsk and the Sviatohirsk Lavra. [15] The ISW acknowledged on June 8 that Russian forces had entered the city but acknowledged it was not clear whether they had completely taken Sviatohirsk. [16] On June 9, Ukrainian media reported that while another western portion of the city was still under Ukrainian control, Russian forces had taken control of a portion of it. [17] Later reports, however, confirmed that the Russian military had indeed taken the town. [1]

Aftermath

Russian weapons were destroyed after Sviatohirsk was taken back by the Ukrainians.

On September 10, not long after Ukrainian forces had taken back Izium, Russian sources claimed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had launched an assault on the town of Svyatohirsk. The Ukrainian National Guard announced that they had retaken the town on the 12th. [18]

According to the Security Service of Ukraine, items that showed evidence of torture were discovered in a location where people were being held against their will close to the Sviatohirsk Lavra.
