24 February 2022

On February 24, 2022, at 5:23 a.m., Russian troops entered Ukraine at the Bashivsk checkpoint and crossed the country's state boundary. Up to 90 persons, including 18 border guards, were reportedly taken hostage at the border checkpoint in Bashivsk, according to Sumy Oblast officials. [1] The detainees were sent to Bryansk oblast's Kokino, a Russian settlement. [2] [3]

The Russian troops who had taken control of the border post at Bachivsk made an attempt to move into the town of Shostka, which sparked the battle at Hlukhiv.

[4]

[5] During a battle, a gas station detonated on the route between Hlukhiv and Bashivsk to the north of the town, killing one Ukrainian soldier and injuring three more. Over the course of the first hour of fighting outside of Hlukhiv, 11 more Ukrainian soldiers were hurt. [6] [7]

Russian troops moved through Hlukhiv at midday on February 24, with Sumy Oblast governor Dmytro Zhyvytskyi declaring that Russian troops controlled the roadway between Hlukhiv and the Russian border, along with the town of Baturyn.

[8]

[9] At 4:24 PM that day, Ukrainian forces claimed to have destroyed a column of Russian vehicles, including 14 armored vehicles and 15 T-72 tanks, among other things.

[10]

[11] On February 24, between 4 and 11:30 p.m., there was no fighting or shelling in Hlukhiv.

Around 11:30, fighting erupted in the village of Peremoha, south of Hlukhiv, and in central Hlukhiv, with Ukrainian forces obliterating a 58th Combined Arms Army convoy.

25 February

The following day, a convoy of 17 Russian trucks drove through Hlukhiv on the way to Dubovichi, and there was one civilian casualty after Russian troops shot at him.

[2] The Kipti-Bachivsk highway was taken under Russian control that evening, and barriers were placed to prevent civilians from using it. For the remainder of the day, the convoy was stuck on the highway. [2] [12]

26-27 February

Although 26 border guards were still in Russian captivity as of February 26, 52 of the previously abducted border guards who had been captured at the Bachivsk crossing were returned to Ukraine[13]. The next day, there was a mass exodus of people from the area. [14]

March—April

The Kipti-Bachivsk roadway, which Russian soldiers had held since the beginning of the invasion, was partially liberated by Ukrainian troops on March 1st evening. It is unknown, nevertheless, whether Sumy Oblast representatives were successful in entering Hlukhiv. [15] [16] On March 2, the Armed Forces of Ukraine and border guards from the 5th border detachment advanced group drove the occupants out and arrived at the state border line in Sumy Oblast. [17] On March 17, in the late afternoon, Russian soldiers cut off electricity and Internet service to Hlukhiv and the rest of Ukraine. [18]

Early in April, following the defeat of the Northeastern Ukraine offensive, Russian forces withdrew from Hlukhiv. On April 11, Ukrainian forces retook control of Hlukhiv and the remainder of the Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv oblasts. But since since it was taken back by Ukrainian forces, Hlukhiv has been the target of Russian bombings and clashes because of its proximity to the Russian border. [19]
