2022: The beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Throughout the Russian invasion of Ukraine in early March 2022, a series of military engagements known as the fights of Voznesensk took place between Russia and Ukraine. These actions were part of the southern Ukraine campaign that took place during the invasion.
Following their victory in the city of Kherson, Russian soldiers moved westward in the direction of the city of Mykolaiv. During the time that Russian forces were attacking Mykolaiv, a Russian column broke off and moved north, where it fought Ukrainian forces twice in the vicinity of the little city of Voznesensk. The fact that Russian forces had access to a bridge that crossed the Southern Bug river and that the city was located in close proximity to the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant contributed to the city's status as a strategically crucial location. [2] [4]
The first conflict
On the 2nd of March 2022, members of the Russian Black Sea Fleet's 126th Coastal Defence Brigade pushed northwest towards the city of Voznesensk from Mykolaiv in an effort to discover a crossing over the Southern Bug river. They started their journey from Mykolaiv. It was said that there were 400 Russian soldiers and 43 vehicles in the column that they sent. [2] [4]
Yevgeniy Velychko, the mayor of the city and one of the Ukrainian commanders, stated in advance that local businessmen assisted Ukrainian forces in the construction of numerous roadblocks, the destruction of a bridge that crossed the Mertvovod River in Voznesensk, and the digging out of the shoreline of the river in order to prevent Russian vehicles from crossing it.
[4]
The Russian military forces opened hostilities by firing the city, causing damage to a number of buildings. Russian paratroopers were dropped to the southwest of the city, while at the same time, an armored column moved from the southeast, staging in the adjoining town of Rakove [uk]. Snipers from Russia set up shop in several of the homes in the neighborhood, and a Russian military outpost was established in one of the gas stations in the area. Several Ukrainian soldiers were killed when Russian armored personnel carriers opened fire on the base of the territorial defense forces in the area. The Russian military was unable to advance further into Voznesensk. The artillery of the Ukrainians started bombarding Russian positions, which stopped the artillery of the Russians from setting up their mortars. [4]
As dusk fell, Russian tanks began firing towards Voznesensk, but they withdrew when they came under fire from the defenders of the city. At the same time, Ukrainian forces kept up their shelling of Russian positions, resulting in the destruction of some Russian vehicles. Soldiers from Ukraine proceeded on foot while firing FGM-148 Javelin missiles supplied by the United States of America towards Russian vehicles, resulting in the destruction of at least three tanks. In addition, Ukrainian forces were successful in shooting down a Russian assault helicopter of the Mil Mi-24 variety. The Russian soldiers pulled back completely on March 3, leaving their equipment and vehicles behind. During their withdrawal, Russian artillery fired into Rakove, damaging a hospital in the process. The village was also pillaged by soldiers from Russia. The Russian column withdrew to the southeast by a distance of 40 miles (64 kilometers). [2] [4]
There were a total of thirty Russian vehicles that were left behind, some of which were tanks. Within that number, Ukrainian forces were successful in rescuing 15 tanks. According to reports from the area, around one hundred Russian soldiers were killed in the battle, and ten of them were captured. There were losses sustained by Ukrainian forces, the majority of which were among the Territorial Defense Forces. During the conflict, twelve innocent bystanders lost their lives. [2] [4]
The second conflict
On March 9, Russian military forces launched yet another assault on the city of Voznesensk.
[6]
[7] Ukrainian military personnel established a defensive position in the area close to the collapsed bridge.
[8] The city was eventually taken over by Russian soldiers the next day. Three days later, on March 13, Ukrainian soldiers successfully retook control of Voznesensk. [1] [9] By the 18th of March, Ukrainian counterattacks surrounding the area had forced the Russians 120 kilometers farther away from the city than they were before. [10] [unreliable source]
After the second assault, the local Ukrainian forces continued to garrison the city because they believed that the Russian forces would resume their attacks.
