Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, escalating the Russo-Ukrainian War that had started in 2014. With more than 6.5 million Ukrainians abandoning their nation and a third of the population being displaced, the invasion led to the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II[3][4]. [6] [7] Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Luhansk Oblast, claimed on his Telegram channel on May 8 that only half of Popasna was under Russian control[8], but he later acknowledged that Ukrainian forces had withdrew. [9] By May 12, Russian forces had won the Battle of Rubizhne against Ukrainian forces, taken complete control of the city, and continued their efforts to encircle Sievierodonetsk. [10] [11]
Toshkivka is a village of 5,000 located south of the main city of Lysychansk, along with the adjoining town of Ustynivka, was a strategic city for Ukrainian and Russian/pro-Russian forces in the Battle of Donbas. Access to Lysychansk and the other minor settlements in Luhansk Oblast west of the Donets river is available to whoever controls the town.
Battle
Russian and LPR soldiers repeatedly attacked the communities of Toshkivka, Voevodivka, and Nyzhnie on May 9 but were repelled by Ukrainian forces. This is when the conflict started. On the Russian side, nine tanks, one Orlan-10 drone, and many other pieces of machinery were destroyed. [12] After a few days of light combat, the war erupted once more between May 20 and May 23, but the Russian forces were unable to make significant progress. [13] [14] Russian forces launched an assault on Toshkivka in an effort to relieve soldiers engaged in the much bigger battle of Sievierodonetsk, which only partially succeeded. [15] Russian and LPR forces were in possession of Toshkivka as of June 21, according to the defence ministries of both Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense also said that its troops had left the area encircling the villages of Hirske and Zolote. [16]
