Battle
In an effort to protect Vasylkiv Air Base, Russian paratroopers from the Russian Airborne Forces started touching down early on the morning of February 26 close to the city of Vasylkiv, which is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the south of the capital city of Kyiv. In the city, the Russian paratroopers and the Ukrainian defenses engaged in intense warfare. [4] [5]
An Ilyushin Il-76 carrying paratroopers from Russia was shot down by a Ukrainian Su-27 fighter jet around 01:30, according to official statements made by the Ukrainian government.
[6]
[7] At 3:20, it was reported that a second Il-76 was shot down over the city of Bila Tserkva, which is located nearby. [8] [9] [10]
Natalia Balasynovych, the mayor of Vasylkiv, reported that the engagement resulted in the wounding of over 200 Ukrainian citizens.
[11]
[12] She subsequently stated that Ukrainian forces had repelled the assault by Russian paratroopers on the military air base near the city and the center street, with the atmosphere in the city having calmed down as a result of their success. [13] [14] According to a source in the Wall Street Journal, Ukrainian forces conducted morning patrols throughout the city in an effort to locate any remaining Russian troops. [15] [16]
It has not yet been possible to obtain visual proof of the Russian Il-76's losses.
[17]
"no credible public evidence has surfaced about the two lost planes or about a drop of paratroopers in Vasylkiv," as reported by The Guardian.

The New York Times cited unnamed Ukrainian officials in their report that at least some of the attackers were members of sleeper cells. These individuals, according to Natalia Balasynovych, the mayor of Vasylkiv, had purchased apartments and moved their families into them one month prior to the invasion. There was no sign of downed aircraft that could be detected in the surrounding area, according to the Ukrainian territorial defense troops' findings. [19]
