Egyptian place value

The lesson began with me writing numbers on cards (one between 2 differentiated) and getting children to use the Egyptian key to write the number. We then explored how people had done it - e.g. in a line, in a column etc. I loved how one pair set up 36 with 3 tens and then the 6 ones split into 2 groups of 3. We talked about this and why it was effective. The children were able to explain that the Egyptians partitioned the numbers.

We then looked at the Egyptian place value and talked about what was the same/different to your system and the modern day. They were able to notice that it was being multiplied by 10 each time.

This was the simple main task:
