Expanded and short multiplication

When the majority of children were confident with the grid method and using the associative law, we moved on to the expanded and short methods of multiplication.

Below is an example of the expanded method, firstly completed with support. Lots of the less able children were making mistakes with multiplying by ten so in the next lesson I actually stripped it right back with this group and they had more opportunity to consolidate multiplying by 10.

Here is an example of middle/more able children working on short multiplication and then moving to word problems:

Again, you can see I made the two calculations give the same answer to generate discussion.
