In the next session I worked with a group who were finding it more difficult and we discussed why it was useful to use factor pairs. We tried a range of combinations and talked about which one made the calculation easier and why

N.B This also brings in the use of the distributive law when you use partitioning to work out trickier multiplications.

The more able children had a range of calculations and had to use factor pairs and independently explain their choices.
