Subtracting fractions

I started the lesson addressing any misconceptions or problem areas from the addition of fractions the day before and grouped children accordingly. One group of children did so well in the previous lesson that I sent them off independently to begin this lesson.

After the corrective work with two other groups, I gathered them for the input of the subtracting fractions lesson.

I started with this slide where I covered the numbers (something Gareth Metcalfe said was effective on recent training) and got them to write the calculation using the codes on their boards. This then generated a discussion about starting with the biggest number. When I showed the actual question, they could all say
