Mindful multiplication

I tend to give my children two calculations with the same answer and they have to prove, explain and justify why they are the same.

This is an example of why 12 x 12 is the same as 16 x 9

Some children used drawings of place value counters to explain...

whilst others just wrote the numbers down....

This is one child's attempt at explaining!


They also come up with their own and explained why.
