About the Style we Practice

We are a member of the Traditional Japanese Karate Network which is an international organization stemming from Japan based-training. The Network is deliberately made up of sensei from differing styles and not badged as one organization, but rather as karate dojo(s) ensuring excellence in karate's traditions upholding the dojo environment and bunbu-ryodo.

The specific style we practice in the Rocherlea Dojo is Shito-Ryu Karate which was founded by Kenwa Mabuni. Shito-Ryu possess the kata of both Goju and Shotokan and offers a good balance of “linear and fast/hard” with “round and soft”, therefore, these three major traditional karate styles are innately connected via their Okinawan origins hundreds of years ago. We honour this age-old tradition and so enjoy training and welcome students from the many forms of martial arts & beginners, to come into our dojo and train with other like minded people.

We have a great support network with 7th & 8th degree black belts in Japan, United States and Australia who sit on our grading panels, run seminars and attend our camps.

Primary instructor

Aita

I
was born in Bhutan and exiled to a Refugee camp in Nepal from 1992 to 2012. I started learning Shito-Ryu Karate at a dojo ran by Bhutanese Karate Association under the supervision of Nepal Karate Federation, and achieved my black belt in 2005.

After my resettlement in Australia, I started learning other style of karate as my style wasn't available in this location. After a few years, I connected with Sensei Sarvan McLinton (TJKN) and have been learning the traditional style of karate since 2020. Now, Iam also teaching traditional karate in affiliation with TJKN, and also connected with DISKA ( Druk International Shito-Ryu Karate Do Association) where we have 14 dojos in the USA, Canada and Australia.

Class types

Kids Under 12`s Classes:

These classes are designed to develop basic motor skills (like balance and hand-eye coordination) whilst also introducing younger children to the traditional aspects of martial arts. Instructors reinforce discipline and etiquette whilst maintaining a good balance between serious training and light-hearted games designed to improve their karate. Confidence building exercises and school bullying are also covered. These classes maintain a high instructor-to- student ratio to ensure your child is receiving quality attention.

Training Fees

First lesson free

Beginners don't need karate uniforms

- we stock for you to purchase if you decide to sign up .

Each year, the classes start from mid January to mid December. Except Christmas and New Year holidays, the classes run throughout the year including school and University holidays. One can join the club at any time of the year. Expenditures on joining the club includes public liability on a yearly basis and uniform. Then you can simply pay a training fee on a monthly basis.

Kata: The first kata in our shito-ryu style is called Shihozuki . Shihouzuki translates to the method/way of 4 punches. Following the shihozuki kata, the kids move onto Juni no kata (also known as Taikyoku) for late orange belt to green belt. Below is Shihouzuki kata.

Belts & Ranks:

At the end of each school term we have a belt test. The student may end up with any of the following outcomes:

  • no rank change if not quite ready

  • a change in level

  • for kids, the addition of a stripe (Kyu level changes)

  • belt colour change

The traditional martial arts as passed to us from Japan is aimed at life learning lessons. Therefore belt testing is always a competency & effort based test, with age & size factored in (i.e. people are not simply promoted for participating).

Dojo Location Map

Advanced Classes: Multiple advanced training options at our Network seminars and camps around Adelaide during the year. At our dojo location we will also host 2 hour seminars twice a year by inviting Shihan Jason Armstrong and Sensei Sarven Mclinton to talk on topics and techniques which are not covered on regular classes. The students will be informed in advance about the details of seminar.

Adult Classes: Adult classes see a variety of people, from high-school students, working parents, all ranging from their teens to their 50`s - age is never a barrier. Classes are designed to suit anyone in any physical condition, whether you are just looking to get fit, or if you want to be pushed to your limit. Adult classes deal with self-defence scenarios, physical conditioning, mental conditioning and meditation.
