What to bring 

• Belt appropriate to your rank (no separate tournament belt required e.g. Aka/Ao not needed)

• mouth guard required for ippon kumite and kumite & strongly recommended for bunkai and flag sparring .

Kumite events also require:

• Mouth guard

• Karate hand mitts (for Ippon kumite & kumite events; we will have this protection gear for sale on the day if needed (gloves $29, leg & foot pads $40). Must be WKF equivalent (does not need to be our organization's version though) for example see here...

• Groin guard (for boys sparring)

• for kids events (but not adults) we want to protect their growing bones, therefore  shin/closed foot/toe guards for eye protection are required (for those sparring; we will have this protection gear for sale on the day if needed (WKF equivalent gloves $29, leg & foot pads $40)). In the case of adult competitors we follow the more traditional route of not over padding the body so students learn how to receive and throw techniques without damaging themselves.

• Chest protector (females only sparring, optional)

* standard competition karate mitts are a requirement of this competition for ippon kumite & kumite. MMA gloves, boxing, cotton only mits, and so on are not appropriate for the safety of your opponent. Gloves an leg pads with closed toes for eye protection must be WKF equivalent (does not need to be our organization's version though, nor do we care about branding/logo) for example see here...

Rules 

Note: If students are doing a very basic stance oriented kata (i.e a tachi kata like Shihozuki ichiban) both competitors can demonstrate the same bunkai (the video above shows kids doing a more advanced kata where each side does a different bunkai).

Demonstration of bunkai involves a team of 2 competitors performing 2 sections of their chosen kata. One team member lines up on the AKA (red) position and the other on SHIRO (white) facing the audience. Both simultaneously perform the segment of the kata that appears earliest in the sequence, then turn to each other and AKA performs the bunkai once slow on SHIRO to clearly indicate the application (without dialogue), then once at full speed. Both then turn back to the audience and simultaneously perform the second selected segment that appears later in the kata. They turn to each other and SHIRO performs that bunkai once slowly on AKA and then once at full speed. Both then turn and bow to the audience, awaiting scores. This is a team event, so both competitors must be well-versed in executing their selection of the team's bunkai and to be a convincing uke when their partner performs. Bunkai judging will be based on the speed, power, fluidity and practicality of the 2 bunkai, scored as a team (the same scoring range as Kata and Team Kata). This event is about not about executing an exhaustive display of every bunkai in the kata, nor acrobatic and fanciful techniques (for example, head kicks are not part of traditional karate kata nor do street police and hospital statistics indicate that they are common to assault/self defense related injuries).

There will be event t-shirts on sale on the day, sorry we are not taking pre-orders so first-in-first served on the day. Visiting sensei bringing students will receive a gift t-shirt (hence adult versions exists in white & black), kids shirts will be grey as pictured below.                   

Teams and draws for the day have been posted above. Some notes:

1. Where we needed fillers we decided to allow 7yr olds to join in for the Pad Relay - it will make the event a little more padded out. For the most part, the 7yr olds have been labelled as Team Captains, their job is to keep their teams quiet, lined up & organized - as that in the end usually determines who wins.

2. In a few cases we have mixed dojo people so as many as possible can be in teams. An example, of this & bullet 1, Louella as a 7yr old from from Mapleton has been added to a Fig Tree Pocket pad relay team (for the most part, teams have only one 7yr old to balance competition i.e. no one team will have three 7yr olds).

3. 7yr olds (10th to 8th kyu only) have been added to the "Kihon Comp" - this has added an extra event for them.

4. If there were not at least 3 competitors in a division - they were pooled with the next closest division.
