What to bring

Kumite events also require:

* standard competition karate mitts are a requirement of this competition for ippon kumite & kumite. MMA gloves, boxing, cotton only mits, and so on are not appropriate for the safety of your opponent. Gloves an leg pads with closed toes for eye protection must be WKF equivalent (does not need to be our organization's version though, nor do we care about branding/logo) for example see here...

Rules

Kata and Team Kata

Kata and Team Kata will be done using side by side elimination (depending on the round we may include scored on a points scale from 0.0 to 10.0). Placings are awarded based on the highest total scores (sum of all judges), and in the event of ties the lowest and highest scores are removed progressively to determine placing.

Kihon Demonstartion (4-6yrs only - Little Tigers)

kids flag sparring.wmv

Flag sparring

Flag sparring is a form of practice sparring for 4-7 yr olds to establish block counter skills. It requires juniors to grab the opponent’s tags (one 'flag' placed on the left and right side of each competitor's hip, in the belt). The students will do well if they block attempted grabs on them and counter grab (but any strategy is OK as long you steal the other's flag). It also simulates Ippon Shobu as each flag is worth Waza-ari or half a point (the first to Ippon, one full point, is the winner). This is a safe and fun jiyu-kumite option available to all our younger competitors under 7 years of age and under. Mouth guards recommended (we supply head gear).

Pad hitting relay race

A division for 4-7yr olds grouped into teams of three (list your team's name during the registration process). Lining up straight and quietly at the beginning and end of your relay is part of the scoring for a victory. Teams of three will line up straight & quiet in "musubidachi" and on hajime (beign) kids must run about 15m to an impact pad and do 2 punches on the red circle then run back and tag the next person in their team to run up to the impact pads until all 3 kids have been through once, then kids repeat the process with the 2nd run up to be a double kick on the pad's red circle. First team to finish and be lined up straight and quiet wins. If the kids miss the red circle for any given punch or kick the supervisors/pad holder will instruct them to do another until they hit the target twice. *Ideally we make an age spread so one 7yr old is mixed with 2 other younger ones & the 7yr old is Team Captain.

Ippon kumite

For all traditional dojo in such styles as Shotokan & Shito-ryu, Ippon Kumite has been the foundation of partner engagement for an understanding of distance, control, precision tracking, clean technique, countering options and fudoshin. As is the custom for kids in many karate tournaments in Japan, this part of the competition will include step over face punch, step over kick & step over body punch (in that order) will be performed by both competitors from left kamae only. Mouth guards required, gloves required & shin pads recommended (we will have this protection gear for sale on the day in case you do not have your own yet  (gloves $30, leg & foot pads $40).

Gloves an leg pads must be WKF equivalent (does not need to be our organization's version though, nor do we care about branding/logo) for example see here...

Kumite:

As the saying goes:

"In Karate or a street altercation, just as in life, you get once chance."

For adults and kids over 12yrs our traditional tournaments are based our kumite bouts on the time tested unchanged rules of Ippon Shobu Kumite, which originated from the 1950s (made most famous  by the JKA and the All Japan Championships of that era). Ippon Shobu enables an opponent to end a bout with one point Ippon (or two 'half-points' Waza-ari at the most) and emphasizes this key point of karate's philosophy, rather than the more sports-karate oriented rule sets which span bouts over a larger range of points (e.g. 4, 6 or 8).

However, for younger kids (8yrs-11yrs) we want to provide them a chance to build experience through repetition, so this tournament will include non-contact sparring matches (kumite) spanning 4 points (4 wazari). Mouth guards required, gloves required & shin-foot pads required (we will have this protection gear for sale on the day if needed (SMAI WKF gloves $30, leg & foot pads $40). For boys they must also wear groin guards (can be purchased from most sports stores for cricket).

Gloves an leg pads must be WKF equivalent (does not need to be our organization's version though, nor do we care about branding/logo) for example see here...

Bunkai

Bunkai (this differs from our adult classical bunkai with street fighting stats applied - see section on kids bunkai in the Karate Theory Manual, section 9.6). Unlike for adults, for kids we take a post-1950s sports approach to bunkai being under 12yrs of age i.e. no head butts, knees, eye gouges etc.. However, even for kids, we do observe some classical/traditional aspects of bunkai in that high heads kicks are not deemed as self defense practical and are not part of bunkai.

Note: If students are doing a very basic stance oriented kata (i.e a tachi kata like Shihozuki ichiban) both competitors can demonstrate the same bunkai (the video above shows kids doing a more advanced kata where each side does a different bunkai).

Demonstration of bunkai involves a team of 2 competitors performing 2 sections of their chosen kata. One team member lines up on the AKA (red) position and the other on SHIRO (white) facing the audience. Both simultaneously perform the segment of the kata that appears earliest in the sequence, then turn to each other and AKA performs the bunkai once slow on SHIRO to clearly indicate the application (without dialogue), then once at full speed. Both then turn back to the audience and simultaneously perform the second selected segment that appears later in the kata. They turn to each other and SHIRO performs that bunkai once slowly on AKA and then once at full speed. Both then turn and bow to the audience, awaiting scores. This is a team event, so both competitors must be well-versed in executing their selection of the team's bunkai and to be a convincing uke when their partner performs. Bunkai judging will be based on the speed, power, fluidity and practicality of the 2 bunkai, scored as a team (the same scoring range as Kata and Team Kata). This event is about not about executing an exhaustive display of every bunkai in the kata, nor acrobatic and fanciful techniques (for example, head kicks are not part of traditional karate kata nor do street police and hospital statistics indicate that they are common to assault/self defense related injuries).

Teams and draws for the day have been posted above. Some notes:

1. Where we needed fillers we decided to allow 7yr olds to join in for the Pad Relay - it will make the event a little more padded out. For the most part, the 7yr olds have been labelled as Team Captains, their job is to keep their teams quiet, lined up & organized - as that in the end usually determines who wins.

2. In a few cases we have mixed dojo people so as many as possible can be in teams. An example, of this & bullet 1, Louella as a 7yr old from from Mapleton has been added to a Fig Tree Pocket pad relay team (for the most part, teams have only one 7yr old to balance competition i.e. no one team will have three 7yr olds).

3. 7yr olds (10th to 8th kyu only) have been added to the "Kihon Comp" - this has added an extra event for them.

4. If there were not at least 3 competitors in a division - they were pooled with the next closest division.
