Featured Instructors

  • Chew Sensei - over 45 years in karate originally part of Kanazawa's organization (shotokan) & after moving to Australia changed to Goju 25 yrs ago & is now directly aligned with Taira sensei of Okinawa. Chew sensei is a 6th Dan.
  • Shihan Jason Armstrong (7th Dan, Shito-ryu) - lived in student of a "Master" in Japan & has placed in international kata & kumite events
  • Sensei Dave Lewis (5th Dan Shito-ryu). Began training in the 1970s competed at national level in the 80s and trained/graded in Japan in that era.
  • Sensei Sarven McLinton (4th Dan, Shito-ryu). Has lived in Japan and while there gained a black belt in Iaido and trained both Kyokushin & Shito-ryu.
  • Sensei Adrian Cartland (3rd Dan), Goju and BJJ practitioner
  • Sensei Callum Monaghn (3rd Dan) Goju & Judo

Schedule

Saturday 9th

8am-10am Kata - Seienchin bunkai & Seipai - joint teaching by Jason Sensei & Sinn Sensei (Location: FTP dojo).

10am-10:30am Morning tea & networking

10:30am-11:15am Dan testing

11:15-12 noon Lunch break (BYO or Lone Pine Riverside Cafe - 5min commute)

12 noon-1:30pm Kumite combinations with an emphasis on mindset & strategy. Jason Sensei (Location: FTP dojo).

1:30-2pm Free kumite training & Dan test meeting

2pm - 2:30 pm Food break and travel to Fig tree Pocket Dojo #2 - FTP dojo

2:30pm-4pm Three concurrent classes of about 10 students each in size, with switch over every 30mins: boxing drills (Darren Shaw & Sinn sensei) & exploration of sanshin variants & Seipai bunkai (Jason sensei).

4pm BBQ and Networking - Jason Sensei's house.

Sunday 10th November

8am -10am Basics & Drills - joint teaching Sinn Sensei, Sarven Sensei & Lewis Sensei (UQ outdoor training - adjacent to lakes).

10am- 10:30am Morning tea

10:30am-11am Taking learnings from the emphasis in karate from each of the past decades (70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s) to better teach today's students and understand cycles in the martial arts across the USA, Asia & Australia. Sinn sensei, Jason sensei & Dave sensei (UQ dojo).

11am-12 noon Lunch (BYO or UQ food place choice)

12-2pm Kung fu techniques and evolution to karate - Sinn sensei (UQ dojo).

2pm to 2:45pm Food and networking break.

3:15pm-4:30pm Bag/pad work - Sinn Sensei, Dave sensei & Adrian Sensei (UQ dojo).

For those still in town Sunday pm - UQ dojo regular class at UQ 6pm-8pm.
