700 feet, Mile 125.8, South side of freeway, Verified
This is a fragment that I have been wanting to check out for a long time, but it always sneaks up on me barreling down the freeway, and I always end up speeding past it. Fortunately, Steve was able to get out there and grab some photos recently!
This is most likely a fragment of the improved US 30 highway and not part of the original Route 2 alignment, though we'll need to confirm that... There could be older pavement under this wider, newer road.
The width is 22' here. Looking to me like the 1952 road, which is just as desirable to mark and catalog.
At Milepost 119 Eastbound; here is a nice stretch of 1951 highway laying right next to the freeway. Steve Hart documented this around a month ago. I saw this, so I pulled over and peeled off a few photographs. This highway was in use until around 1965, when I-80N was built alongside.
"This was the main and modern highway for only 13-14 years."
From SQUALLY HOOK at 70.1 m. [West of Hwy. 730 Junction], Mount Hood is seen to the southwest, rising above the waters of the Columbia River.
The link below leads to an interesting look at the Squally Hook Rapids on page 52
