Son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, was exiled to Izu after the Taira Clan defeated the Minamoto Clan and his father who was the General. Yoritomo was the next heir of the Minamoto clan.
A housemen of Minamoto no Masayori had a dream that the ownership of the 'Sword of Command' had changed from the Taira house to Minamoto no Yoritomo (under the authorization of the Great Bodhisattva Hachiman). A second part of the dream was that this sword would pass to Yoritomo's descendants (under the authorization of the Kasuga Deity). He later becomes the first Shogun.
Later, with the aide of Mongaku, an eccentric monk that was in exile with Yoritomo in Izu, Yoritomo's imperial exile was lifted by Go-Shirakawa which led to the uprising to overthrow the Heike. In order to convince Yoritomo, Mongaku brings a skull of what he claims to be Yoritomo's father.
In Book Eight, he is seen giving many gifts to Yasusada, the envoy of the Cloistered Eminence, as a way to characterize him as a knowledgeable ruler.
