8.2 - The Taira, having fled from the capital, are firmly holed up in Dazaifu, Kyushu (modern day Fukuoka Prefecture).
8.3 - Okata Koreyoshi receives orders from the capital to drive the Taira out of Kyushu. He begins mustering an army in Bungo Province.
8.4 - After unsuccessful negotiations with Koreyoshi, the Taira pre-emptively attack Koreyoshi, who is now encamped in Chikugo Province. Koreyoshi's larger army repels the Taira, and begins a long chase which ends with the Taira fleeing Kyushu. The Taira flee to Yamaga, then to Buzen, and then set sail to Shikoku.
8.7 - The Taira have landed in Yashima and from there they launch attacks on provinces in San'yodo and Nankaido. Minamoto forces, led by Yata Yoshikoyo, rally in Bitchu Province and prepare to sail on Yashima. The Taira are alerted to their presence and move to intercept them off the shore of Mizushima. In the ensuing battle, the Minamoto forces are shattered.
8.9 - Minamoto no Yukiie travels through Harima Province to meet the approaching Taira. Yukiie urges his smaller army towards the enemy, but the Taira forces split down the middle into five groups and surround them. The battle is a decisive Taira victory, despite Minamoto no Yukiie managing to escape.
