Name: Ginyo (祇女)
Appearance: Book 1 Episode 6
Birth/Death: (Not Recorded)
Bio:
This character, like some others, is most likely fictional and used to illustrate Kiyomori's bad side. Ginyo appeared in Book 1 as the younger sister of Giō (祗王) and as the daughter of dancer Toji (刀自). She was a shirabyoshi dancer along with her sister Giō; their artistry in dance made them the "talk of the town." Ginyo was prized for being the sister of Kiyomori's favorite dancer.
She lived with her sister and mother for 3 years on Kiyomori's property. However, when another shiraboyshi dancer by the name of Hotoke (仏) steals Kiyomori's heart, Giō loses her job. This causes Ginyo's family to be kicked off Kiyomori's residence.
A little while later, Ginyo returns with Giō to Kiyomori's residence on the request that Giō sing for Hotoke. After Giō performs, she weeps and claims that she will throw herself in the river, if she has to continue performing for Kiyomori. Ginyo responds that she too will throw herself in the river, if that is what Giō chooses to do. Giō instead chooses to become a nun, and Ginyo does the same at the age of 19, stating that she is happy to reject the world with her.
After some time, they are joined by Hotoke, and the four of them lived together as nuns until their death.
