Book 8 of The Tale of the Heike includes numerous references to warrior dress during the Heian period. These include hitatare, a ceremonial robe worn by the warrior class, and eboshi, a form of head wear during this time. Here are some more details about hitatare and eboshi.

The hitatare was a ceremonial robe worn by the warrior class. As in The Tale of the Heike, samurais became more aristocratic in the Heian period, so they began to dress to match the times. The hitatare was characterized by the V-shaped neck area on the robe. The picture to the left actually shows an eboshi hat, as they are commonly worn with hitatare.

Eboshi
Eboshi were also worn by the warrior class as a more formal head wear. It was mostly worn during ritual occasions. There are various styles of eboshi, but a common one during the Heian period was the tate eboshi, which is characterized by a tall appearance.
