One of the most significant battles in the Tale of the Heike; the Battle of Kurikara or also known as the Battle of Tonamiyama, took place in the Kurikara Ravine or otherwise known as the Kurikara Valley.
Koremori, of the Taira splits his army into two, one to be sent to Yoshinaka and another to Yoritomo. Meanwhile, Yoshinaka sees the Taira forces coming up the Kurikara pass. Prior, Yoshinaka went to seek divine help from Hachiman Shrine for the battle. Yoshinaka uses deceptive tactics by displaying many white banners to trick the Taira into thinking that their force was bigger than it actually is. He proceeds to split his army into three, sending one to the rear, another beneath the Kurikara pass, and finally the third group followed him through a central location. To ensure stealth, Yoshinaka distracts the Taira by initiating a battle with whistling-bulb arrows. Once the sun sets, Yoshinaka attacks the Taira army, forcing the Taira to retreat to the Kurikara Ravine. It is here that Yoshinaka attacks the Taira army from both the front and rear, leaving almost all 70,000 of the Taira army to be forced down into the Kurikara Ravine.
