Summary:
This chapter introduces the student to Karma and how it is used in the Tales of the Heike. It also introduces the importance of having a male or female heir and how this can give you more power in the complicated government.
Lecture Model
Male Heir- Important for royalty
Many rituals surround the birth of royal child. If the child wasn’t royal, generally aristocrats wanted a daughter. Appeal to all deities.
Assessment – Formative & Summative:
Informally, instructor will gage student comprehension through response to questions posed throughout lecture. Formal assessment will include reading quiz and comprehensive exam.
Closure/Follow-Up/Homework:
Students should be required to have read the chapter prior to discussion and be encouraged to read supplemental material as the week goes on. They should keep a constant list of characters and that list should be compared at the beginning of the week to ensure everyone knows all of the people mentioned in the chapter. As reading progresses they should be able to relate themes from this chapter to future chapters as well.
