Current links and partnerships outside of SLRN
The SRL has an impressive track record of collaboration and technical assistance with numerous TB control projects in countries, both run by the national programmes as well as NGOs. This has been possible thanks to the grants from the Belgian Development Cooperation and various Belgian institutions, as well as the support received from organizations such as the Damien Foundation Belgium, Médecins sans Frontières and the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.
Services provided by the SRL
The Mycobacteriology Unit of the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium has been a member of the Supranational TB reference laboratory network and supported the WHO/IUATLD Global Project on Drug Resistance Surveillance since its start in 1994. It has been the coordinating SRL since 1999. In that capacity, it is responsible for the organization of annual rounds of proficiency testing for TB drug susceptibility testing (DST) by means of panels of strains. Gradually, over time, 85 national and other reference laboratories performing DST in countries have been included into the proficiency testing rounds.
