student stories: why i chose hlhs

During our school's tenure, Health Leadership High School would not have been able to achieve our significant accomplishments without the intelligent, hardworking and compassionate students who attend our school. Through practicing Positive Youth Development, students are at the center of our staff's thoughts when designing curriculum and student supports for the school year. Now we would love for you to hear from students firsthand about why they chose to attend HLHS and how our school community has helped transform their lives.

I originally chose to enroll at Health leadership High School because it had smaller class sizes and was geared towards the health field, which is something I was interested in at the time.

Then I continued going to Health Leadership because I found that the community there was greater than anything I've ever experienced outside of school. The school actually felt like a family, and a home away from home for me. Health Leadership High School will always hold a very special place in my heart.

I chose HLHS because I knew that I would be given more opportunities than in a bigger public high school. The teachers and staff pay more attention to you and offer one on one help. If we were in a traditional school wouldn’t be given. It is also a health based school and offers many internships in and out of the medical field.

HLHS has transformed me to be more independent & to trust the process of life. It also transformed me by helping me to build a family and get along with others.

What I like about Health Leadership is it feels like family too. They go out of their way to help you with other things in your personal life that could be affecting your school work and or attendance. They take you seriously and treat you like a responsible adult. What I really love is that they touch more base on real world things like being healthy, maintaining a good diet, managing your money, how to be financially stable, everything about going into college, raising a baby, getting involved with community, preparing you for jobs and interviews. They helped me get back on track to graduating. It changed my point of view for my future. Through out my life, I never thought of wanting to become a Travel Nurse. Im really glad I moved to Health Leadership.

My favorite thing about Health Leadership High School, is all the support you receive from the staff. Teachers make sure you are mentally, physically and emotionally ok. They look out for you in ways, no other teachers in public schools do.

Being a student of HLHS has given me the chance to prove not to myself but those around me that I will always be capable of doing what I set my mind too. Things will never come easy it’s the effort, hard work, failing and trying again therefore within time those lesson’s will shape you into becoming someone better. Believe in yourself, strive to do better and you will be able to accomplish any goals you set in life!!

My favorite thing about Health Leadership High School is all the support that the teachers and other staff give you when you may or may not be struggling. They are always there for the students.

HLHS helps students think about their goals and prepares them to get a head start at being successful. It's a school that guides us as we grow into the person we want to be.

My favorite thing about this school is that it's the only school that I've been to where the teachers haven't done something to embarrass me in front of the whole class. They are also always willing to help you and encourage you to achieve more than you thought possible.

Why did I choose HLHS? Because I liked the school and what they taught us. We also had to work with the community, we were able to work together with friends, with our teachers that supported us with everything. Also to Ms. Carolina Quinones and Ms. Cinthya Olivas that helped us a lot to comprehend things and helped us to graduate. It was a great experience for me and I will always remember it!

I chose HLHS because it was a school that is focused on project based learning and they assist students a lot with catching up their credits. The school has provided me with many meaningful lessons such as time management, and presentation skills. Overall the school has helped me become a better person personally, as well as academically

DAINELIS CASTRO

Class of 2021

Hello, my name is Dainelis Castro, an upcoming senior at Health Leadership High School. Recently I was asked why I chose to attend HLHS and how it transformed my life. I chose to attend Health Leadership because my freshman year I attended a public high school with 2,000+ students and I didn’t feel the connection or relationship with any of the teachers due to how many students they had to focus on. It was hard to ask questions and get help understanding things. While at Health I’ve had nothing but awesome connections with teachers and very close bonds with students throughout the year, with new projects every trimester learning things hands-on and in groups. Not only the teachers but every student at Health wants and pushes me to succeed. Seeing this type of environment after my sophomore year at Health made me want to stay so I continued onto junior year now wrapping up and moving on to senior year at health.

The school helped transform my life in a positive way helping me mature, become independent and helped ready myself for college and my future at a young age. At only 16 I was offered an internship called, FACES For The Future, shadowing different doctors at Lovelace and other healthcare facilities! Working in my community and getting to know how life is at a young age made me open up and be less shy and more social as well as independent.

What makes HLHS so special is how much of a family it is. When I walk through those doors I feel at home, like I can talk to the staff about my goals and I know they will help. I know if I ever would to need something the staff and community would help, not just for my high school education but in the long run as well! They care and that is the difference between Health Leadership High School and any other school!

Class of 2021

My name is Trystan Martinez and the reason I enrolled and stayed at HLHS was because I was hearing good things about this school. The first thing that I loved was there was no dress code, but appropriate clothing! I love fashion so I was able to express myself with my clothes. The school has a nursing program once you become a junior if you choose that career. I’ve always wanted to become a nurse so I thought it would be a great opportunity to get a head start on classes. Also the teachers are such good helpers, they are like family to a lot of us. If any students ever needed anything they were right there to help and make sure we were okay and on top of it. Once my first year was done, I wanted to proceed with my education there. I have attended HLHS for 2 and a half years now going on 3, and I wouldn't switch schools for anything. I would love my work to be shown on the school website for people to understand why this is a good school. If anyone is interested in enrolling here I suggest yes if you want to pursue your career in nursing or in any other great programs offered here at HLHS.

I chose HLHS I because I had heard about it from a friend. The way he explained it made it sound so good. When I went, it was such a good school. I passed with good grades. The teachers helped out a lot and understand us. I've always thought I was gonna fail till the teachers helped me out.
