FREEDOM SCHOOL

Project Description

Driving Question: How can our system of education be transformed to better support marginalized students in our community?

Project Health Domains: Systems

Project Problem + Purpose: This class is exploring the institution of education, the communities in our history who dared to dream of schools that work towards justice, and what visions of education we want to build moving into the future.

Community Partners + Engagement:

UNM Community Engagement Center, Food Corps, NACA Inspired School Network , Families United for Education, Office of Community Health, NM Asian Family Center, City of Albuquerque

Although we originally were going to have multiple guest speakers throughout the term we were only able to have one pair of speakers who covered the foot of oppression(UNM CEC). All of the school proposals will be shared with community partners to view and analyze.

Teacher Highlights

This was the first time this class was taught and we explored a lot of historical events and social issues around schooling. It was exciting to see what students chose to highlight from their readings and the insights they had into working towards justice for those who are marginalized. I was excited and learned a lot about the processes of learning about oppression and unlearning other socializations. The class helped me grow a lot in my teaching and I'm excited to see where future iterations of this project go! - Ms. Omkulthoom Qassem, Project Teacher B.A., M.A.
