SPORTS THERAPY

Project Description

Original Driving Question: How has the development of new policies/protocols in injury rehabilitation impacted the therapy practices for OTs, PTs, and ATs?

Revised Driving Question: 1. What are the necessary precautions coaches and athletes will need to take to remain safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic? 2. How have physical therapists and athletic trainers adapted the way they provide treatment to their injured patients due to COVID19?

Project Health Domains: This project addresses determinants of health as well as systems of healthcare.

Project Problem + Purpose: During this time of quarantine, physical therapy and the rehabilitation of sports injuries, as well as other common physical injuries, have had to adapt to a digital platform. Students will be assuming the role of policy writers and PT/AT/OT when creating new protocols for how athletics/sports will transform in the future. In addition, students tackled the controversial topic of CTE and concussions in sports. As historians students analyzed the history of CTE and the government's role in enforcing the new concussion protocols for youth/professional sports.

Community Partners + Engagement: Unfortunately this project did not have a community partner to aid in its curriculum development. However, students were able to engage with their community by creating protocols and resources to share with the Albuquerque Charter School League. This is the currently the league in which HLHS competes with charter schools across the metro. Students are able to give back to their communities by having a voice in the policies that will directly affect our student athletes in the seasons to come.

Teacher Highlights

"I was blown away by the 5 Worst Injuries assignment that students produced. Some were so gruesome that I could barely watch the videos! The students truly enjoyed trying to freak us out with some crazy injuries, and I loved seeing that type of engagement from them!" - Mr. S

"I absolutely loved the students creativity and honesty when creating their final products. Many of the students in this project are student athletes and it was incredibly humbling to hear their responses to how their lives will change as athletes moving forward." - Mrs. Burkett

STUDENT Highlights

"What I am most proud of from this project is my Concussions and CTE presentation. I personally think I did really well. What I learned that was most interesting to me was that CTE has no actual cure, just a way to slow it down."

"Im proud that I could accomplished all the goals for this class as an example turning the work on time and meeting all the requirements. The most interesting thing for me was how many injuries can you have in just being at one sport, it can happen to anyone and all the injuries have a name."

"I am most proud of learning that even though a pandemic like this, athletes are able to still get exercise and stay fit. even though they were not able to have physical contact, they had virtual contact with their coaches and teammates as well as therapists being available to help athletes cope with their problems."

"What I am post proud of from this project would be how creative I got with some of my work, and I'm proud of actually finishing."

"I am most proud of how my presentation skills have changed through the year. What I think was most interesting was the effect of head impacts leading to CTE."

"Lo que me parecio interesante es sobre las leciones de los atletas y como era su recuperacion. Del proyecto del que estoy orgullosa es de como podian los coaches y los atletas mantenerse seguros."
