Community health workers

Community Health Workers is a dual credit certification class offered to students at Health Leadership High School. Students were provided an opportunity to earn their Community Health Worker certification through CNM! This trimester they completed their coursework and a practicum through outreach efforts and collaboration with Road Runner Food Bank of New Mexico.

These students began the program in November of 2019 and completed it in April 2020. The CHW program required six courses that included a CPR and First Aid certificate, Introduction to Community Health, Introduction to Public Health, Documentation and Confidentiality, Health Promotion and Community Practicum. This was a dual enrollment opportunity where students earned credits in Economics, Government and US History.

Students were also required to complete an onsite practicum. Due to COVID-19 their practicum opportunity had to be adjusted. Nevertheless, our students continued their efforts and worked with Roadrunner Foodbank through an online platform to create pamphlets and flyers with resource information that were sent out in food boxes to the community. The 11 students who have completed this program are now eligible to attain a state CHW certification and begin practicum-based work in federally qualified health centers, hospital departments, and clinics.
