Let me share few thoughts around this topic of consciousness and soul. The english word SOUL does not explain clearly this concept of Atman.
Imagine a sun is reflecting in the water droplets of the fountain, due to this reflection a rainbow is created. If i have to draw a parallel ... SUN = GOD ; water droplet=consciousness , sun appearing as a reflection in the droplet at microcosm is the soul and at macrocosm is the brahman. the rainbow= the manifested entity at microcosm and entire existence at the macrocosm.
Its important to understand this concept of reflection.
God -> Reflection is the Atman/Brahman in-> Reflection of Consciousness on Mind brings the awareness of the objects which the mind is trying to perceive.
Consciousness is NOT awareness but awareness is due to consciousness. Hope i am making sense.
From the above comparison notice that there is NO consciousness in GOD. Hence GOD has no awareness of any sort. And also one can conclude that without Reflection of GOD(Atman/Brahman) and CONSCIOUSNESS there is no manifestation (rainbow in case of the above simile). That basically implies both exists in all non-life(minerals, rocks, covers all insentient objects) and in all sentient( plants, insects, birds, animals, humans). In insentient objects consciousness is almost zero and as this consciousness is expanding we can see the both morphological and mental evolution in the manifested life. This what makes humans to the top in earthly life.
More consciousness does not automatically means more intelligence but it can bring more clarity. If we have to perceive the ATMAN/BRAHMAN our available consciousness is not enough. When we embark on the path of realization means knowing ATMAN, we need this consciousness to exapnd significantly event to get the minuscule perception of the the ATMAN.
Remember atman is only a reflection, but by knowing the reflection we can become aware of the real thing which is GOD. That is why all of the practice of spirituality is to gain this expansion.
