महाशिवरात्री पर श्री ओंकारेश्वर—ममलेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग के दर्शन हेतु हजारो श्रध्दालु ओंकारेश्वर पहुंचते है इस दिन मंदिर के द्वार 24 घंटे खुले रहते है। फाल्गुन कृष्ण चतुर्दशी को महाशिवरात्रि पर्व मनाया जाता है। पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार  माना जाता है कि सृष्टि का प्रारंभ इसी दिन से हुआ एवं इसी दिन भगवान शिव का विवाह देवी पार्वती के साथ हुआ था। साथ ही इस दिन समुद्र मंथन से निकले हलाहल विष को भगवान शिव ने अपने कंठ में रख लिया था। विष इतना शक्तिशाली था कि भगवान शिव बहुत दर्द से पीड़ित थे और उनका गला नीला हो गया था। इस कारण से भगवान शिव 'नीलकंठ' के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुये। उपचार के लिए, चिकित्सकों ने देवताओं को भगवान शिव को रात भर जागते रहने की सलाह दी। इस प्रकार, भगवान भगवान शिव के चिंतन में एक सतर्कता रखी। शिव का आनंद लेने और जागने के लिए, देवताओं ने अलग-अलग नृत्य और संगीत बजाने लगे। जैसे सुबह  हुई, उनकी भक्ति से प्रसन्न भगवान शिव ने उन सभी को आशीर्वाद दिया। तब से यह तिथि शिवरात्रि के रूप में मनाई जाने लगी।

On Mahashivratri, thousands of devotees reach Omkareshwar to darshan Shri Omkareshwar - Mamaleshwar Jyotirlinga, on this day the temple gates are open 24 hours. Maha Shivaratri festival is celebrated on Phalgun Krishna Chaturdashi. According to puran, it is believed that the creation started from this day and on this day Lord Shiva was married to Goddess Parvati. Also on this day, Lord Shiva kept the halahal poison that came out from the churning of the sea in his throat. The poison was so powerful that Lord Shiva was suffering from great pain and his throat had turned blue. For this reason Lord Shiva became famous as 'Neelkanth'. For the treatment, the doctors advised the gods to keep Lord Shiva awake throughout the night. Thus, the Lord kept a vigil in contemplation of Lord Shiva. To enjoy and awaken Shiva, the gods played different dances and music. Pleased with their devotion as the morning approached, Lord Shiva blessed them all. Since then this date started being celebrated as Shivaratri.
