Hopefully most of you already follow "Nerdwriter" on Youtube, however if you don't, he dropped a great little video on how Walter Murch approached sound editing in films such as The Godfather.
I've attached the link below, thought it might be a good point of reference for students as to why sound will be so important in their film projects.
