Hi All,
I'm going to do a mini unit soon looking at adverts and how they influence, specifically looking at ads that cross into the realm of social commentary. On my list are the Gilette ads, fight like a girl and dumb ways to die. I'm just wondering if anyone has any other recommendations or any resources on any of these?
I think 'The Pitch' portion of Gruen is well worth a look as well, usually focussing on some element of social commentary and the process of constructing advertising to make an appeal for these unfavourable ideas to audiences. It obviously has a different tone than these ads that are appealing to emotion (though they do use that often), but it's an interest look at the process in an abstracted way.
They also obviously break down other ads and again look at the process behind them.
I used these three for an assessment in power and persuasion a few years back π
I find the Paralympic adverts to be quite powerful too.
I always thought this one about domestic violence was one of the better, and more impactful examples. Itβs more or less scrubbed from most things these days and only exists in low quality forms (being uploaded in the palaeolithic era of 2005).
And as a quick note on the role of Gillette in regards to power and persuasion β a good book end to bring up after you look at their attempt to be on the right side of history re:MeToo is to look back at their advertising from about a century ago and how they are more or less singlehandedly responsible for the modern beauty expectation of body hair removal for women.
