A quick search didn't show any recent mention, so I thought I'd bring your attention to this amazing online resource:
Not only is it the home base of a pretty good podcast, but there are extensive articles about a wide range of notable directors and their bodies of work, including commentary on and links to their early student films (when available). If the link to a film in the article is dead due to copyright, just hunt on youtube and you may find the copyright holder has posted it.
