Hi All,
An update to last weeks question about Schools using well known songs for inspirational, educational, mood lifting, staff with bad dance moves in timing to a song. Phew!
Firstly, thanks for all the feedback from last week, we have a wonderful group of well educated people in this field and during these testing times its comforting have a support network for our subject.
Okay, so the crux of it is this. Even as an educational institution, we still have to cough up the cash if you are wanting to use a copywrite song. So APRA AMCOS license does not cover us for ‘synchronisation’ which is what we/ most people are or wanting to do.
This includes bad lip syncing, miming of music, alteration of the song or timed dodgy dance moves.
After talking to APRA they put us through to the label and Artists manager that we were wishing to use…. and low and behold a fee would incur.
I am well versed with this system as Year 11 and 12’s love to use their favorite artists in their productions and I encourage them ( challenge them) to get in contact with their Artists management to see what the fee will be.
But as a School, I realise now the regulation is exactly the same. So be careful fellow Mediatorians.
Unless the cash is coughed up, you are rolling the dice.
Note: This is if you are placing the video onto a social platform or making it available to be shared etc. If its private, or internal in the School, that’s different.

There are three blanket copyright licences that cover the uses of music in schools:
APRA Schools’ Public Performance Licence
AMCOS Schools’ Photocopy Licence
APRA/AMCOS/ARIA Schools’ AV Licence
The AV licence allows for the sharing of content between teachers.
