The project "Spermboost" won the BIP Proof innovation prize!
The project led by Marco G. Alves was one of the winners of the innovation prize BIP Proof, granted by the University of Porto and the Amadeu Dias Foundation. This prize, worth 10,000€, is a stimuli for further improvement of the selected ideas, with the ultimate objective to transfer technology from basic research to market. Congratulations!
Our group representation at the MiP School 2018!
Ana D. Martins, Luís Crisóstomo and Marco G. Alves have represented our group at the MiP School 2018, which took place on the 20-24 October, at the Hurtigruten cruise: Tromso - Bergen, Norway. This school is organized every year by the COST Action MitoEAGLE, and it is dedicated to mitochondrial physiology. In this year's edition, Luís Crisóstomo was selected for a talk, while Ana D. Martins and Marco were selected as speakers for the "Meet the experts" session.
Our group representation at the ICDM 2018!
Ana D. Martins, Luís Crisóstomo, Marco G. Alves and Pedro F. Oliveira have represented our group at the ICDM 2018, which took place on the 11-13 October, at the Grand Hilton Hotel, Seoul, South Korea. This congress is organized yearly by the Korean Association of Diabetes. In this year's edition, Ana D. Martins was selected for a short talk, while the remaining presented a poster.
A paper has been published in "Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology"!
The paper by Martins AD et al. entitled “Metabolic dynamics of human Sertoli cells are differentially modulated by physiological and pharmacological concentrations of GLP-1” has been accepted for publication in the journal “Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology”. In this paper, the authors describe the effect of different doses of GLP-1 in the metabolic function of human Sertoli cells in vitro. Congratulations!

A.C. Lopes, P.F. Oliveira et al. have published the paper "Shedding light into the relevance of telomeres in human reproduction and male factor infertility". In this paper, the authors review the molecular mechanisms underlying telomere length and function and how they impact sperm quality. Congratulations!
A paper has been published in “Cells”!
Bernardino RL, Carrageta DF et al. Have published the paper “Estrogen Modulates Glycerol Permeability in Sertoli Cells through Downregulation of Aquaporin-9” in the special issue “Aquaporin” of the journal “Cells”. In this paper, the authors identify the presence of AQP3 and AQP9 in mouse Sertoli cells and its regulation by estradiol. Congratulations!

The Sertoli Cell research group was present at the II International Meeting in Reproductive Andrology, held in the 21-22 September, at the Centro de Reabilitação do Norte, Francelos, Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. Pedro F. Oliveira and Marco G. Alves were invited speakers in this meeting.
ICDM 2018 - Travel grants!
Pedro F. Oliveira, Marco G. Alves, Ana D. Martins and Luís Crisóstomo have been awarded with a travel grant to participate in the International Congress of Diabetes & Metabolism 2018, organized by the Korean Diabetes Association. The ICDM 2018 will be held from 11 to 13 October in Seoul, South Korea. Congratulations to all!

David F. Carrageta - Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology PhD Fellowship!
David F. Carrageta has been awarded a PhD fellowship by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The PhD project will be developed under the supervision of Marco G. Alves and co-supervision of Prof. Mário Sousa (ICBAS-UP) and Prof. Mariana P. Monteiro (ICBAS-UP) at UMIB/ICBAS-UP. Congratulations!
A paper has been published in "British Journal of Pharmacology"!
Marco G. Alves, PhD was invited by Lucília Saraiva, Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, to help her in her work towards anticancer therapy using p53-activating agent. A paper resulting from this collaboration has just been published in the British Journal of Pharmacology. Congratulations!
A paper has been published in "Current Neuropharmacology"!
Dysfunction of glucose metabolism and Alzheimer Disease are connected. The work led by Prof. Branca Silva with the collaboration of our team members Marco G. Alves, PhD and Pedro F. Oliveira, PhD is focused on studying the molecular mechanisms by which some natural products can exert a protective effect on these diseases. This new paper discusses how polyphenols can be a common agent for treating both pathologies. Congratulations!

Jarak I, Almeida SP et al. have published the paper "Senescence and declining reproductive potential: Insight into molecular mechanisms through testicular metabolomics", in the journal "BBA - Molecular Basis of Disease". In this paper, the authors present the metabolic changes occurring in the testicular tissue of aging mice. Congratulations!

TRAITOR - New project Kick Off!
Here is the Kick Off of our latest Project Grant. Is it possible that an overweight or obese father can pass bad "information" to the offspring? That Traitor...!! Our new funded Grant (€ 239.187) by FCT will allow us to work on that topic. Our grant title is: TRaitor - Tracking TRAnsgenerational epigenetic Inheritance of metabolic diseases Transmitted via overweight or obese fathers. This project will have Marco G. Alves, PhD as PI, and Pedro F. Oliveira, PhD as Co-PI. The project have been evaluated with maximum grade in all parameters by international experts. Congratulations to all team!
Our researchers at the 43rd FEBS Congress!
Luís Crisóstomo and Susana P. Almeida, PhD Students, have represented our research group at the 43rd FEBS Congress, held between 7-12 July at the Prague Congress Center, Prague, Czech Republic. Both students have been selected, and have been awarded a FEBS bursary, for presenting their ongoing work in poster format at this Congress, the biggest Biochemistry Congress in Europe. A chapter entitled “Role of reactive oxygen species in diabetes-induced male reproductive dysfunction" by Rato L et al. has been accepted for publication in the book "Oxidants, Antioxidants, and Impact of the Oxidative Status in Male Reproduction". This chapter provides an overview of the impact of reactive oxygen species induced by diabetes in male fertility. Congratulations!
A paper has been published in "Current Cancer Drug Targets"!
Marco G. Alves and Pedro F. Oliveira co-authored the paper "Glycolysis inhibition as a strategy for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment?", which was accepted for publication in "Current Cancer Drug Targets". In this review the authors summarize, discuss and present an overview on the different approaches to inhibit the glycolytic metabolism in cancer cells, which may be very effective in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. Marco G. Alves is a co-author of the paper "Metabolomics and bladder cancer: current state and future perspectives.", which was been accepted for publication in "Acta Urológica Portuguesa", the official medical journal by the Portuguese Association of Urology. In this paper the authors discuss the present state of art of metabolomics applied for the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer. Congratulations!
A paper has been published in "The Journals of Gerontology"!
Marco G. Alves and Pedro F. Oliveira co-authored the paper "Testicular aging: an overview of ultrastructural, cellular and molecular alterations.", which was accepted for publication in "The journals of Gerontology". In this paper the authors discuss the effects of ageing in testes, from a functional, physiological and morphological perspective, and the possible outcomes in male fertility potential.

Paper in "Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition" accepted for publication!
The paper: "Pharmacological Potential of methylxanthines: retrospective analysis and future expectations" was accepted for publication in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition. In this paper we discuss the relevance of methylxanthine use in medicine and the emerging contexts where they have shown promise and were hinted as potential therapeutical tools.

Our delegation at the 2018 International Forum of White Tea and Glycometabolism related diseases!
Marco G. Alves and Pedro F. Oliveira were at the 2018 International Forum of White Tea and Glycometabolism related diseases, in Fuding, China, to present some talks and discuss novel mechanisms by which White tea can be useful to counteract glycometabolism-related diseases. The event was a success.

Marco G. Alves and Pedro F. Oliveira were at the University of Zheijang, Hangzhou, China to lecture. Marco G. alves lectured a master class entitled: “Metabolomics and Metabonomics: basic concepts to research applications" while Pedro F. Oliveira lectured a classe entitled: “Rodent models for the study of metabolic diseases”. We hope to establish new collaborations with this University.
Luís Crisóstomo - Best Poster in Basic Research!
Luís Crisóstomo won the prize for Best Poster presentation in Basic Research, at the 14th Portuguese Congress in Diabetes, held on 9-11 March 2018, at Hotel Tivoli Marina Vilamoura, Vilamoura, Portugal. The poster, entitled "Effect of high-fat diets and its reversion to normal diet in male fertility", showed the first results of the ongoing PhD work, supervised by Marco G. Alves, PhD, and co-supervised by Mário Sousa, MD, PhD (ICBAS-UP), and João Raposo, MD, PhD (NOVA Medical School, Lisbon) . Congratulations!

"Sertoli Cells - Methods and Protocols" - On Sale Now!
Our group has written a book entitled: "Sertoli Cells - Methods and Protocols". This textbook serves as a valuable resource for experienced researchers in reproductive biology, particularly andrologists, but also for future investigators and young students starting to study Sertoli Cells. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Our group further contributed with 5 out of the 20 chapters in this book. Congratulations!

An article by Carrageta D.F. et al. entitled "Anti-obesity potential of natural methylxanthines" has been accepted for publication in Journal of Functional Foods. The paper reviews updated bibliography eliciting the role of natural ocurring methylxanthines, such as caffeine, theobromine or theophylline, as potential pharmacological tools to address obesity. Luís Crisóstomo was invited by the Rotary Club of Benedita to give a lecture about the health problems linked to Obesity and Diabetes, at the local Community Center. The lecture will be held on the 2nd February, at 21h, and is entitled "Obesity and Diabetes: the silent epidemics of the 21st century. This conference was announced on local news and an interview with Luís was published in the local newspaper "O Alcoa". Congratulations!
