A paper has been published in "Journal of Cellular Physiology"! 

A paper by Pereira SC et al entitled "Obesity-related genes are expressed in human Sertoli cells and modulated by energy homeostasis regulating hormones" has just been accepted for publication in the "Journal of Cellular Physiology". In this paper, the authors describe the modulation of gene expression of obesity-related genes in Sertoli Cells by ghrelin and leptin. Congratulations!

A paper has been published in "BBA - Molecular Basis of Disease"! 

A paper by Ribeiro JC et al entitled "Aquaporins and (in)fertility: More than just water transport" has just been accepted for publication in the "Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - Molecular Basis of Disease". In this review, the authors discuss the relevance of aquaporins to the reproductive success and how the newest findings on aquaporin-mediated mechanism can be applied in the improvement of infertility treatments. A paper has been published in "Environmental Epigenetics"! 

A paper by Pereira SC, Crisóstomo L et al entitled "Metabolic diseases affect male reproduction and induce signatures in gametes that may compromise the offspring health" has just been accepted for publication in the "Environmental Epigenetics". In this review, the authors discuss the effects of acquired metabolic disorders and diet to sperm parameters and male reproductive potential, and recent findings regarding the paternal epigenetic inheritance of those diseases. Silva SM has been granted the MSc title! 

Samuel M Silva, BSc has successfully defended his MSc dissertation on the 10 December 2020, thus granting him the MSc degree on Forensic and Clinical Analytical Toxicology by the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto. The dissertation, co-supervised by Marco G. Alves and entitled “Interindividual variability in ABCB1 expression in human Sertoli cells”, was evaluated with 19 points out of 20. Congratulations!

Alves & Crisóstomo presented our research at the "Andrology 2020"! 

Marco G. Alves, PhD and Luís Crisóstomo, MSc have presented our research at the "Andrology 2020" Congress, held online from 5 to 9 December. Marco G. Alves was invited to speak in the "Young Researchers in Andrology" session, where he spoke about how "Metabolic cooperation between testicular cells is essential for spermatogenesis". Luís Crisóstomo was selected to present his work, entitled "Prediabetes induces transgenerational effects in testicular metabolome and sperm quality: a silent comorbidity?" at the "Public Awareness" symposium. A project by Alves MG et al. was selected for the BIP 2020! 

The project "ScHIVA", promoted by Marco G. Alves was selected for the final fase of the Business Ignition Programme (BIP) 2020! Pedro F. Oliveira and our former member David Martín-Hidalgo are also part of the team. They propose the development of protocols to enhance Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) in highly valued domestic animals, (i.e. stallions). Congratulations!

Marco G. Alves and Pedro F. Oliveira have been awarded the SPMR prize 2020! 

Marco G. Alves and Pedro F. Oliveira were awarded by the Portuguese Society of Reproductive Medicine (SPMR) with the research prize 2020. The prize, worth 5.000€, has been awarded to the project "GPR30 mRNA abundance in human spermatozoa and its association with outcomes of assisted reproduction". The aim of this project is to increase the effectiveness of assisted reproduction techniques, using sperm GPR30 mRNA as a predictor of embryo quality. Congratulations!

A paper has been published in "AJP-Endocrinology and Metabolism"! 

A paper by Crisóstomo L et al entitled "Diet during early life defines testicular lipid content and sperm quality in adulthood" has just been accepted for publication in the "American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism". In this work, the authors demonstrate the irreversible changes promoted by high-fat diet from early age, even transiently, in the testicular lipidome, with negative consequences to sperm quality later in life. Best poster award - Bárbara G. Carvalho! 

Bárbara G. Carvalho has been awarded the Poster-Oral Prize at the ESCI Virtual Meeting 2020 – COVID19 Edition, for her short talk entitled “Activation of mTOR pathway during short-term preservation increases spermatozoa glycolytic activity”. The congress was virtually held from 20th to 30th September. Congratulations!

A paper has been published in "Reproductive Sciences"! 

A paper by Moreira BP et al entitled "Effect of Leptin in Human Sertoli Cells Mitochondrial Physiology" has just been accepted for publication in the journal "Reproductive Sciences". In this work, the authors suggest that the increase of SIRT1/3 expression in Sertoli Cells after exposure to leptin suggests a role for leptin in glycolysis, thus affecting the nutritional support of germ cells, in a mechanism that can be linked to obesity-related subfertility/infertility. A paper by Carrageta DF et al entitled "Mitochondrial Activation and Reactive Oxygen-Species Overproduction during Sperm Capacitation are Independent of Glucose Stimuli" has just been accepted for publication in the journal "Antioxidants". In this work, the authors suggest new physiological roles of glucose, mitochondrial activity and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in human sperm capacitation.  Congratulations!

A paper by Alves MG et al entitled "Sperm DNA Fragmentation: A New Guideline for Clinicians" has just been accepted for publication in the "World Journal of Men's Health". This guideline paper for clinicians results from our collaboration with the Cleveland Fertility Clinic and emphasizes the importance of sperm DNA Fragmentation when assessing male infertility. A paper by Crisóstomo L et al entitled "Lifestyle, metabolic disorders and male hypogonadism – A one-way ticket?" has just been accepted for publication in the journal "Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology". In this review, the authors discuss the effectiveness of lifestyle intervention in the prevention, management and remission of male hypogonadism, and the potential health implications of paternal hypogonadism to the offspring. A paper by Pinto S, Carrageta DF et al entitled "Sperm Selection Strategies and Their Impact on Assisted Reproductive Technology Outcomes" has just been accepted for publication in the journal "Andrologia". In this review, the authors discuss different sperm selection strategies for retrieving spermatozoa with the highest fertilising potential and their impact on ART outcomes are discussed. In this study, the researchers elucidate the potential role of differentially expressed proteins in the seminal plasma as diagnostic biomarker for primary and secondary infertility. A paper has been published in "Antioxidants & Redox Signaling"! 

An article by Dias TR et al entitled "Endogenous and exogenous antioxidants as a tool to ameliorate male infertility induced by reactive oxygen species" has been accepted for publication in "Antioxidants & Redox Signaling". In this review, the researchers address the regulation of redox hemodynamics in the male reproductive tract by endogenous and exogenous antioxidants and the importance of their cooperation for the maintenance of fertility. Luís Crisóstomo has participated as speaker and juror at the "X INST"! 

Luís Crisóstomo has participated at the X International Natural Sciences Tournament as a jury member and as the main speaker for the opening and closing sessions of the Grand Final. The Final was held from the 7-12 February 2020 at the Biological and Chemical Research Centre of the University of Warsaw, Warsaw, Poland. At this stage 11 teams from 6 countries and 3 different continents have been selected, and 26 jurors from 12 countries evaluated their performance.. Congratulations!

Luís Crisóstomo has been awarded with a "Young Scientist Forum 2020 grant"! 

Luís Crisóstomo has been selected to attend the 20th Young Scientist Forum, where we will present the work "Diet intervention after childhood obesity is insufficient to revert changes in testicular metabolic/lipidomic profiles and sperm quality"! The forum will be held in Lovran, Croatia, from 1st to 4th July 2020. This grant also gives access to the main event, the 45th FEBS Congress, which will be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 4th to 9th July 2020. Congratulations!

David Carrageta has been awarded with an ECO/ICO 2020 Travel Grant, for the European Congress of Obesity 2020. The congress will be held in Dublin, Ireland, from 17th to 20th May 2020. David will present his work entitled “Hyperglycemia induces capacitation and ROS overproduction on human sperm”. Congratulations!

A paper has been published in "Andrology"! 

An article by Braga PC, Pereira SC, Ribeiro JP et al entitled "Late-Onset Hypogonadism and Lifestyle-Related Metabolic Disorders" has been accepted for publication in "Andrology". In this review, the researchers support that obesity and diabetes, have a greater impact on causing hypogonadotropic hypogonadism than tissue senescence, notably by aggravating testosterone deficiency. Congratulations!

An article by Silva JF, Moreira BP et al entitled "Is technical-grade Chlordane an Obesogen?" has been accepted for publication in "Current Medicinal Chemistry". In this review, the researchers discuss the environmental persistence of chlordane and how does it relate to animal and human endocrine disruption, as well as its obesogenic properties. Ana D. Martins - PhD degree achieved!

Ana D. Martins is the most recent PhD member of our group after defending her PhD thesis entitled "Hormonal regulation of spermatogenesis: role of ghrelin-leptin axis and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP1) in nutrient membrane transport through sertoli cell/blood-testis barrier". The public defense was held today, 8th January 2020, at the Salão Nobre of ICBAS/FFUP complex (room P4EA). Congratulations!
