The paper of our team entiled: "Molecular mechanisms beyond glucose transport in diabetes-related male infertility" has just been awarded a certificate as one of the TOP5 most cited papers published in BBA-Molecular Basis of Disease in 2013 and cited in 2014/2015 up until June 2016 according to data from Scopus and the Journal. Congratulations!

Obesity Reviews article accepted!

An article by Cardoso et. al entitled "Obesogens and Male Fertility" has been accepted for publication in Obesity Reviews. This paper shows an up-to-date overview of the impact of obesogens on testicular physiology. The review addresses the effects of obesogens on male reproductive parameters and the consequences for male fertility. Congratulations!

The I Symposium in Diabesity and Fertility, organized by our team with the support of UMIB-ICBAS has officially started. It aims to be a National platform to discuss Diabetes, Obesity, Nutrition and Fertility. It has more than 150 delegates and the support of the most relevant National Societies. In the next 2 days, some of the most relevant experts on these fields will participate in this event.

An article by Dias et. al entitled "White tea intake prevents prediabetes-induced metabolic dysfunctions in testis and epididymis preserving sperm quality" has been accepted for publication in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology article accepted

An article entitled "Ghrelin acts as energy status sensor of male reproduction by modulating Sertoli cells glycolytic metabolism and mitochondrial bioenergetics" has been accepted for publication in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology. This paper shows that the action of ghrelin on human Sertoli cells energy status is related with lactate levels in a dose-dependent way, affecting the support of spermatogenesis.

04-03-2016Hormone and Metabolic Research article accepted!!An article entitled "Expression of estrogen receptors alpha (ER-α), beta (ER-β) and G protein-coupled receptor 30 (GPR30) in testicular tissue of men with Klinefelter syndrome" has been accepted for publication in Hormone and Metabolic Research. GPR30 is essential to mediate estrogen effects over steroidogenesis and our data illustrates that it may underpin the testicular alterations observed in KS men.

03-03-2016Current Medicinal Chemistry article accepted!!An article entitled "Sirtuins: novel players in male reproductive health" has been accepted for publication in Current Medicinal Chemistry. This review discusses the recent findings on the role of sirtuins in testicular metabolism and addresses the concept that sirtuins can be a potential target to counteract subfertility/infertility promoted by diabetes mellitus.

Ana D. Martins presented a seminar at UMIB Post-Graduates Scientific Seminars. The topic of the seminar was "Ghrelin acts as an energy status sensor of male reproduction" and discussed the role of ghrelin affecting spermatogenesis through a direct action on SC function, modulating its bioenergetic status, in a manner that may be linked to the nutritional status of the individual.

An article entitled Estradiol modulates Na+ -dependent HCO3 - transporters altering intracellular pH and ion transport in human Sertoli cells: A role on male fertility? has been accepted for publication in Biology of the Cell. In this study we report an association between increased levels of E2 and the expression/ function of Na+ -dependent HCO3 - transporters in human SCs providing new evidence on the mechanisms by which E2 can regulate SCs physiology and consequently spermatogenesis.

In this study we evaluate the individual and synergistic effects of tea’s major components in epididymal spermatozoa survival and oxidative profile during storage at room temperature.
