A paper has been published in "Antioxidants & Redox Signaling"!

A paper by João C Ribeiro et al entitled "Exploring the role of oxidative stress in sperm motility: a proteomics network approach" has just been accepted for publication in the journal "Antioxidants & Redox Signaling". In this review, the authors discuss the potential of proteomics in the investigation of the biological processes preventing oxidative damage in sperm cells and seminal plasma.  Congratulations!

A paper by Sara C Pereira et al entitled "Impact of Environmental and Lifestyle Use of Chromium on Male Fertility: Focus on Antioxidant Activity and Oxidative Stress" has just been accepted for publication in the journal "Antioxidants". In this work, the authors review the risks of chromium to male fertility, notably related to oxidative stress.  Congratulations!

A paper by Monteiro BS, Freire-Brito L et al entitled "Mitochondrial Uncoupling Proteins (UCPs) as Key Modulators of ROS Homeostasis: A Crosstalk between Diabesity and Male Infertility?" has just been accepted for publication in the journal "Antioxidants". In this work, the authors review the role of UCPs in testicular function, specially in the context of diabesity-related male infertility.  Congratulations!

A paper has been published in "Animal Reproduction Science"! 

A paper by Guerra-Carvalho B, Carrageta DF,  Crisóstomo L et al. has been published in  "Animal Reproduction Sciences", in a Special Issue In memoriam of Prof. Duane Garner. The paper entitled "Molecular mechanisms regulating spermatogenesis in vertebrates: Environmental, metabolic, and epigenetic factor effects" reviews the most recent advances in Molecular Biology related to regulation of spermatogenesis and potential implications to animal production. Congratulations!

Luís Crisóstomo - Best Pitch Talk at Endopäivät 2021!

Luís Crisóstomo was awarded with the Best Pitch Talk at Endopäivät 2021, for his presentation entitled "Sperm small RNAs modulate inherited metabolic memory of ancestral high-fat diet in mice". The congress promoted by the Finnish Society of Endocrinology was held in the 4th and 5th of November at the Aalto University Töölö, in Helsinki, Finland. Congratulations!

Our representation at Endopäivät 2021!

Marco G. Alves and Luís Crisóstomo have participated at the Annual Meeting of the Finnish Society of Endocrinology - "Endopäiväit"! Marco G. Alves was one of keynote speakers of the Scientific session 1, chaired by Noora Kotaja, while Luís Crisóstomo was selected for a pitch talk in the same session. The congress was held in the 4th and 5th of November at the Aalto University Töölö, in Helsinki, Finland. Congratulations!

Our participation in the I WebRePRO

Our group had a major participation and contribution to the I WebRePRO. David Carrageta has even awarded with the Best Selected Talk Award, for his talk "Human spermatozoa secrete insulin in a glucose-dependent manner", while Luís Crisóstomo and has awarded a Honourable Mention for his poster presentation, "Testicular Inherited metabolic memory of high-fat diet causes sperm defects up to grandsons". The congress was held online from 26th to 27th July. Congratulations!

Our participation in INST 2021

Luís Crisóstomo and João Ribeiro have participated in the International Natural Sciences Tournament as Jurors. This year edition was held online, from 22nd to 25th July, with four teams from three different countries competing for the Trophy. Congratulations!

A collaborative paper including Marco G. Alves entitled "Insulin treatment to type 1 male diabetic rats protects fertility by avoiding testicular apoptosis and cell cycle arrest" has been accepted for publication in the journal "Gene".  In this study, the demonstrate the protective role of insulin therapy to testicular and sperm physiology. Congratulations!

Top cited papers of 2020 - Reproduction

The paper "A switch from high-fat to normal diet does not restore sperm quality but prevents metabolic syndrome" by Crisóstomo et al. is among the top cited papers of 2020 of the journal Reproduction. The journal's impact factor has increased significantly during last year, and it is now ranked #9 in the field of Reproductive Biology. Congratulations!

A paper by Crisóstomo L et al entitled "Inheritable testicular metabolic memory of high‑fat diet causes transgenerational sperm defects in mice" has been accepted for publication in "Scientific Reports".  In this study, the researchers describe the functional and metabolic changes of testicular tissue due to the adoption of high-fat diet, and its persistence up to two generations, a phenomenon coined as “inherited metabolic memory” of testicular cells. Congratulations!

A paper has been published in "F&S Science"! 

A paper by Pereira SC et al entitled "Expression of obesity-related genes in human spermatozoa affects the outcomes of reproductive treatments" has just been accepted for publication in "F&S Science".  In this study the authors correlate spermatozoa obesity-related gene transcripts (ORGs) with sperm and embryo quality parameters to predict ART outcomes. Congratulations!

A paper has been published in "Cancers"! 

A paper including Alves MG entitled "Targeting p53 for Melanoma Treatment: Counteracting Tumour Proliferation, Dissemination and Therapeutic Resistance" has just been accepted for publication in the journal "Cancers".  In this study, the research team tested the antitumor potential of the p53-activating agent SLMP53-2 against melanoma, using two- and three-dimensional cell cultures and xenograft mouse models. Congratulations!

A paper has been published in "World Journal of Men's Health"! 

A collaborative paper including Alves MG entitled "A Global Survey of Reproductive Specialists to Determine the Clinical Utility of Oxidative Stress Testing and Antioxidant Use in Male Infertility" has just been accepted for publication in the "World Journal of Men's Health". This paper results from our collaboration with the Cleveland Fertility Clinic and surveys the the clinical relevance of antioxidant therapy/supplementation in male infertility among according to reproductive specialists. Congratulations!

David Carrageta was awarded with the SPD "Charneco da Costa" grant!

David F. Carrageta was awarded with the "Charneco da Costa" research grant at the 17th Portuguese Congress of Diabetes. The prize granted by the Portuguese Society of Diabetology awards 5000€ to support an innovative project in fundamental research on diabetes. David was awarded for the project “Insulinossomes - a crosstalk between Sertoli cells and spermatozoa”, whose aim is to study the role of insulin in human Sertoli Cells, spermatozoa and fertility. Congratulations!

Our group was represented at the 17th Portuguese Congress of Diabetes with a Short talk by Marco G. Alves (The adoption of fat-rich diets by the father causes deleterious effects to testicular metabolome and function of the grandsons); and 2 posters by David F. Carrageta (The human spermatozoon synthesizes and releases insulin in response to glucose) and Luís Crisóstomo (Ancestral exposure to high-fat diets promote a pro-inflammatory environment in testis linked to sperm defects). A review paper by Ribeiro JC et al. entitled "Insights and clinical potential of proteomics in understanding spermatogenesis" has been accepted for publication in "Expert Review of Proteomics". In this review the authors discussed the advent of proteomics-based diagnosis and treatment of subfertility and infertility in men. Congratulations!

Our research is one of the most cited papers of "Human Reproduction Update"! 

A collaborative paper of Alves MG, Oliveira PF and our collaborators at the Cleveland Clinic is one of the most cited papers of the journal "Human Reproduction Update" (IF = 12.684) during the year of 2020. The paper "Diabetes-induced hyperglycemia impairs male reproductive function: a systematic review" summarizes the impact of hyperglycemia on male reproductive health with a particular emphasis on the molecular mechanisms that influence the testis and other parts of the male reproductive tract. Congratulations!

This guideline paper for clinicians results from our collaboration with the Cleveland Fertility Clinic and critically discusses the relevance of antioxidant therapy/supplementation in male infertility. A collaborative paper including Oliveira PF and Alves MG entitled "Intermittent Hypoxic Conditioning Rescues Cognition and Mitochondrial Bioenergetic Profile in the Triple Transgenic Mouse Model of Alzheimer’s Disease" has just been accepted for publication in the "International Journal of Molecular Sciences". In this paper the authors demonstrate the efficacy of Intermittent Hypoxic Conditioning in forestalling the manifestations of Alzheimer’s Disease, using a mouse model. Congratulations!

Mª João Meneses - PhD degree achieved! 

Mª João Meneses is the most recent PhD member of our group after defending her PhD thesis entitled "Unsuspected players on the pathophysiology of prediabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease". The opponents were Young-Bum Kim, MD, PhD (Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center) and Hans Zischka, PhD (Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen and Technical University Munich). The public defense was held today, 20th January 2021, via Zoom. Congratulations!
