Marco G. Alves - APU Research Grant 2017 awarded!

Marco G. Alves is member of one of the teams which have been awarded a Research Grant by the Portuguese Association of Urology (APU). APU have been awarded three research grants this year, worth 8,000€ each, for relevant works on the field of bladder Cancer. The three winning projects will be coordinated by a multi-institutional consortium, including the Unit for Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine (UMIB) of ICBAS. Congratulations!

Tatiana Yashechkina has been awarded a Master degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology after defending her thesis, entitled "Is genistein a threat to male reproductive potential?", in a public presentation that took place at the Department of Biology - University of Aveiro. Tito T. Jesus has represented our research group at the "Science, Health and Communication" meeting, which was held at the Auditorium of the Library Almeida Garret, Porto, on the 24th November 2017. This meeting was organized on the framework of the official celebrations for the National Day for Scientific Culture, and discussed about the Scientific Communication from the Researchers to the Community.

Oliveira and Alves have published an article in "Human Reproduction Update"!

An article by Maresch CC et al., including Oliveira PF and Alves MG, entitled "Diabetes-induced hyperglycemia impairs male reproductive function: a systematic review." has been accepted for publication in Human Reproduction Update. The paper summarizes the impact of hyperglycemia on male reproductive health with a particular emphasis on the molecular mechanisms that influence the testis and other parts of the male reproductive tract. Pedro F. Oliveira spoke at the 189th Portuguese Gynecology Society meeting!

Pedro F. Oliveira presented a lecture entitled "A investigação em Uroginecologia - Como contornar a falência dos tecidos" (The research in Urogynecology - How to avoid tissue failure) at the 189th meeting of the Portuguese Gynecology Society.  This meeting was held on the 10th and 11th November, at the Hotel Montebelo Vista Alegre, Ílhavo - Portugal. Crisóstomo and Moreira will speak at the MiP 2017/MitoEAGLE Conference!

The PhD student Luís Crisóstomo and the MSc member Bruno P. Moreira will present their work at the MiP 2017 / MitoEAGLE Conference. Moreira will present a poster and Crisóstomo will present a talk, both on Thursday afternoon, 16th November. Crisóstomo was also invited to be chair of the session "WG4: MitoEAGLE data repository for blood cells and cultured cells", on Friday afternoon, 17th November. Moreira have been granted a Master degree in Biomedical Sciences after defending their thesis, in a public presentation that took place at the Faculty of Health Sciences - University of Beira Interior, Covilhã - Portugal. Bernardo presented "Aquaporin-9 as a molecular partner of CFTR in the Blood-Testis Barrier", while Bruno obtained his degree with "Leptin and Sertoli cells mitochondrial bioenergetics". Both of them obtained a classification of 19 values (out of 20). Congratulations!

An article by Cardoso et al. was published in "Archives of Toxicology"!

An article by Cardoso A. et al. entitled "The effects of the obesogen tributyltin on the metabolism of Sertoli cells cultured ex vivo" has been accepted for publication in Archives of Toxicology. Molecular Human Reproduction paper published!

A review article by Crisóstomo L et al entitled: "Glycerol and testicular activity: the good, the bad and the ugly" was accepted for publication in Molecular Human Reproduction. This review critically discusses the role of glycerol, a by-product of dietary fat (triglycerides), on the metabolism of Sertoli Cells, and its eventual impact on testicular function and male fertility. The article is available in our Publications section, and in MHR's digital edition.

"Biochemistry of Andrology" - On Sale Now!

Our group has written a book entitled: "Biochemistry of Andrology". This textbook comprehensively covers the physiology and biochemistry of the processes in the male reproductive system. Our PhD students at MiPschool 2017 MITOEAGLE were selected for oral presentation!

The PhD students Luís Crisóstomo, Raquel L. Bernardino and Tânia R. Dias were selected to present their work in an oral presentation at the 10th MiPschool MITOEAGLE, at Obergurgl, Austria. Luís will be the first, presenting his work on Monday afternoon, 24th July, in the session "B2: Life style, degenerative diseases". Tânia and Raquel will present theirs on the following day, 25th July, by the afternoon, in the session "D2: Pharmacological intervention, toxicology and regulation". The program can be accessed here. Reproduction, Fertility and Development paper published!

An article by González-Fernández L et al entitled: "Expanded equine cumulus-oocyte complexes exhibit higher meiotic competence and lower glucose consumption than compact cumulus-oocyte complexes" was accepted for publication in Reproduction, Fertility and Development. This paper studied the uptake and metabolism of glucose as well as its possible association with the meiotic competence of expanded and compact equine oocytes. It resulted from a collaboration with Prof. Macías-García.

Current Pharmaceutical Design article published!

An article by Almeida SP et al entitled "Fertility and sperm quality in the aging male" has been accepted for publication in Current Pharmaceutical Design. The paper discuss the molecular mechanisms involved in the alteration of the reproductive function in aging men, the functioning of the reproductive axis and what are the major effects of aging in spermatogenesis and, finally, how aging affects sperm quality and possible causes underlying sperm dysfunction with special emphasis in oxidative stress. Marco G. Alves will be part of the invited panel for the session 1 of "science talks" at ICBAS. These talks will serve as reflection for the 50 years of Peter Mitchell Grey Book (“Chemiosmotic Coupling in Oxidative and Photosynthetic Phosphorylation”); the 80 years of (“The Role of Citric Acid in Intermediate Metabolism in Animal Tissues”) and the birth of the first baby with 3 parents. Mitochondria will be on spotlight. The session will occur in 21st March at the Foyer Bar of ICBAS!

Toxicology in Vitro article accepted!

An article by Dias TR et al entitled "Implications of epigallocatechin-3-gallate in cultured human Sertoli cells glycolytic and oxidative profile" has been accepted for publication in Toxicology in Vitro. The paper describes the antioxidant potential of epigallocatechin-3-gallate, the most abundant tea catechin, on human Sertoli Cells function. Congratulations!

Reproduction article accepted!

An article by Oliveira PF et al entitled "Obesity, energy balance and spermatogenesis" has been accepted for publication in Reproduction.  The paper discuss how energy balance may modulate hormonal signalling and sperm quality in overweight and obese men, some molecular mechanisms that mediate obesity-related dysfunction in male reproductive system and how paternal obesity may lead to trait inheritance.  Finally, it is explored how lifestyle modifications and sustained weight loss, particularly the loss achieved by bariatric surgery, may revert some of the deleterious effects of obesity in men and their offspring. Congratulations!
