Math for America (MfA) Experiential Educators

  • Goals: inspire, encourage, and support fellow educators in engaging in scientific fieldwork that continues to expand their own content knowledge and influence their teaching practices.

  • We learned about setting up Immersive Reader, Google Add On for Nearpod, and the different activity types that provide engaging and dynamic live and student paced learning for all learners, including ELLs and SWDs.

  • Learning Target: I can collaborate with others to create an engaging lesson/activity that has embedded differentiation to support all my students using Nearpod.

  • Nearpod Tips and Resources from PS 48 (DOE log in required)

  • Overview of how we identify students who may need English language acquisition and learning supports, plus resources, scaffolds, and materials for amplifying the teaching and learning in your classroom.

  • This is just the beginning: Where do we want to go next to support ELLs?

  • Co-presented with Sage Hunter, we explore, How might general education teachers best meet the needs of diverse learners, particularly English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with individualized education plans (IEPs), and what protocols for sharing information and tracking progress are most effective?

The goals over this 6 session series were to use the time together to collaboratively:

  • Deepen our understanding of how academic language learning looks and feels

  • Understand guiding documents and principals from NYSED and NYCDOE

  • Experiment with technology platforms that promote language acquisition and learning

Science and ENL Together!

Learn about strategies for incorporating science exploring and inquiry into English as a New Language (ENL) teaching and learning. Just like mathematics, science affords multiple concrete entry points for English Language Learners (ELLs). Let this be the beginning of a collaboration. Ask for access to the PS 48 ELL Toolbox digital resource collection.

PS 48 Dual Language Program

Empowering learners to learn mathematics, science, social studies, alongside Spanish and English Language Arts (ELA), to become empowered and marketable adults. PS 48 started the program in Fall 2017 in Kindergarten, and each year expands to the next year. Since the Fall of 2022, the program has been offered in all grades, K-5. If you are interested in your child attending, please reach out to the school!
