Families of Students Learning English (MLLs/ELLs*)

*MLLs means "Multilingual Language Learners (MLLs)" and  ELLs means "English Language Learners (ELLs)."  The acronym represents someone who is learning to understand (listen and read) and communicate (speak and write) in multiple languages, including English.

You will go through the following steps during an ELL Parent Orientation for students entering New York City Department of Education schools for the first time. We will use the language you prefer!

For more information, click here for the NYCDOE Schools page.  Learn more about the PS 48 Dual Language program (Spanish and English).

This whiteboard animation video, which runs approximately twelve minutes, describes the English Language Learner identification and assessment process and outlines in detail various available program options. It also describes the differences between English as a New Language and the various Bilingual Education program models. You may have seen this video at the orientation at your child's school. The video is currently available in Arabic, Bengali, English, French, Haitian, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Urdu with more translations to come!
