The Hunts Point Slave Burial Ground Project seeks to definitively locate and commemorate the lives of slaves that lived in Hunts Point, Bronx, New York. Though the graves may have been obliterated their lives shall be remembered. The project works with students from PS 48, a New York City public school, alongside local historians, community organizations, museums, city agencies to investigate the final resting place of the slaves from various historical and prominent New York families.

Using a Compass

A compass is a tool that combines geography and magnetism, since the earth is somewhat like a giant magnet! The compass has a circle on the outside that points to the cardinal directions: north, south, west, and east.

The compass needle will point towards magnetic north (somewhere near the North Pole!). This means you know where north is always at. Just move the round ring so that the "N" for north is in line with the needle, and now you know where you are. But, hmmm...which side of the needle? You will have to investigate this. How will you know you are right? :)

"Think you’re a geography expert?" Well play this game, and even compete with your friends! "Test your knowledge with BBC Travel’s Geoguessr – the game that proves how well you know the world! First, move around using your mouse and figure out where you are. Then click on the map in the lower right hand corner to place your marker (zoom in to increase your accuracy). When you’re sure, click the “make a guess” button, and find out how close you were! Once you’ve mastered the basics, set a time limit or challenge a friend. The world’s a huge place – get exploring!"

Sit back and enjoy the flight. You will be entering the atmosphere to explore the clouds and landscape. As you enjoy the flight, think about some others questions, and don't forget to pause if you need to.

Flying Over Hunts Point & the Bronx

Describe the objects you see. Describe the patterns. Describe the natural world. Describe the built environment. Consider how you could use this "aerial" view to develop a map.

Project School Tour Posters

These student-developed posters for Project School Tour utilized iPad apps to learn local geography, develop persuasive arguments, and hone graphic design skills alongside developing academic English. This intermediate step helped students create their Project School Tour short films to be featured on the PS 48 website. Can you do this?
