Hydroponics

We usually think about growing plants in soil.  "Hydroponics" is a bit different.  When we grow plants in water, we call it hydroponics.  This is a different way to grow plants.   Did you know that "hydro" means water?  "Ponos" means labor or work.  So hydroponics is like "working or growing in water."  Something like that!

Pollinating Indoor Hydroponic Plants

Why are students doing this?  Compare and contrast outdoor and indoor environments.  Then you will get an idea maybe!  Outdoors there are more insects and air movement (wind) around plants that causes pollen to travel from flower to flower to pollinate the flowers.  Indoors there is a lot less insects and wind.  Students help recreate the pollination process that insect and animals usually do.  Now the plants are pollinated and hopefully will begin to fruit (with seeds for the next plant to begin growing)!
