About  'Sci-Wiki-Tific'  &  Mr. Czarka

I am Mr. Czarka.  I am a teacher at PS 48.  I teach English as a New Language (ENL).  I help you learn more English.  But I am more than a teacher.  I am a friend.  I am someone's son.  I speak Spanish.  I like to run.  I like to bike with my friends.  I like to cook food.  I like being a student too!  I investigate things that make me curious.  I guess this makes me a scientist...just like YOU!  When you wonder about how something works, and think of possible ideas, you're thinking like a scientist!   Go back to our classroom to keep learning.  Or if you can explore some fun on your own so that you are Always Learning!

Here is some more about me as a professional (which means, my career, or job, as a teacher).

I serve as a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) and Math for America (MfA) Master Teacher in the New York City public schools, where I was a Big Apple Award finalist. My work as a progressive English as a New Language (ENL) educator incorporates digital literacy, environmental science and historical research to engage students in learning English.  I regularly write grants to provide students with hands on learning opportunities.  I am a co-founder of the Hunts Point Slave Burial Ground Project (HPSBG), an educational project in the South Bronx that seeks to 'Transform Learning About History to Doing Something About History.' For over 20 years, I have actively pursued opportunities for my students to interact with the natural world in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx where my school is located. I have participated in a 10-day hydrographic and plankton survey of the Eastern Pacific with NOAA's Teacher at Sea program.  I am always curious to learn, have fun while learning, and continue to go to school myself!  Yes, even Mr. Czarka has homework...still...after all these years.  :)

Yes, Mr. Czarka was a child before, in his previous life.  :)  He still likes to play, laugh, spend time with family and friends, and learn new things about the world we live in.  These photos are of me when I was your age!  Yes, every adult was a child once!  Most of us still are.  You will be my age one day too!  :)  That won't stop you from having fun, laughing, and dreaming.     ~Mr. Czarka
